A Brilliant Spectrum presents, with its 30 works, a select and concise survey of the course of color photography, from its emergence as an accepted artistic tool in the 1960s and 70s, with vivid color photographs by the established artists Evelyn Hofer, Kwame Brathwaite and William Eggleston, up to today’s most conceptually-driven practices, as seen in the seemingly-abstract work of Hannah Karsen and Olaf Breuning.

With impeccable control of light, timing, and framing, the young Julius Shulman (b. 1910, New York City; d. 2009, Los Angeles) captured life in Los Angeles including, friends, hikers, “Hollywoodland,” refinery tanks, oil derricks, roads under construction, and more. Through these images one can see the promise of Los Angeles and the talent that would become Julius Shulman.
