John Sonsini (b. 1950, Rome, NY) is a nationally-recognized artist who began painting in the late 1970s. Since then his practice has developed into one focused on rendering the human figure especially through portraiture.

Julius Shulman, Sunday Trekkers on Mount Hollywood, 1933. 

With impeccable control of light, timing, and framing, the young Julius Shulman (b. 1910, New York City; d. 2009, Los Angeles) captured life in Los Angeles including, friends, hikers, “Hollywoodland,” refinery tanks, oil derricks, roads under construction, and more. Through these images one can see the promise of Los Angeles and the talent that would become Julius Shulman.

This afternoon, pianist Constantine Finehouse, clarinetist Joanne Kim, violinist Han Soo Kim, and cellist Sang Yhee present “Johannes Brahms in Retrospect.” This program features bookend works of the composer’s life: two from his early twenties - Piano Trio No. 1 in B major, Op. 8, and Sonatensatz for violin and piano; the third Brahms wrote at at 58 years old, the Clarinet Trio in A Minor, Op. 114.
