Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation is pleased to announce a new exhibition project with Yassi Mazandi, their next Artist in Residence. One of the highlights of their fall program, Yassi Mazandi in Residence is curated by Frederick Janka, Executive Director, and features a selection of recent ceramic sculptures by the Iranian born and Los Angeles based artist. A new collection of works on paper will also be created on site as part of her residency. This is the artist's first institutional solo exhibition on the West Coast and promises to be a tour de force.

The innovative strategies in Yassi’s studio practice have also inspired Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation's programatic theme this fall of Learning the Wrong Way. As an artist that is constantly experimenting and challenging conventional approaches to learning, Yassi actively pushes the boundaries of how an artist should use material. For example, experimenting with self-defined modes of working with ceramics have led the artist to use paper porcelain to make amorphous and bulbous wheel-thrown pods. She has also developed an intuitive technique of hand carving clay over many weeks to produce intricate and otherworldly forms. Both examples of her technique will be featured in her exhibition this fall.

Nature Abstracted Workshop

January 5 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Wildling Museum of Art & Nature, 1511 Mission Drive
Solvang, CA 93463 United States
+ Google Map
$10 – $65

“Nature Abstracted,” a three-hour workshop for adults (teens are also welcome), will start from a photograph of a place in the natural world which the student has brought or chosen. Painting an abstract version of a picture you have taken, in a natural setting where you have been, such as a lake in the Sierras, the Grand Canyon, an Alaska glacier, or the view of the hills from your backyard, can be more meaningful. After a few warm-up exercises and descriptions of different styles of abstract art, students will paint an acrylic abstraction of this photo on canvas.
