As part of the city’s National Arts and Humanities Month, State Street in Downtown Santa Barbara will hold its 9th annual Pianos on State Program.

Pianos on State is an interactive exhibit that encourages all to participate in the overall celebration of arts and culture. The pianos, painted by local artists throughout Santa Barbara, will be displayed in designated areas up and down the length of State Street from October 2-24. All musicians and passers by are welcome to have musical freedom on the instruments between the hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Pianos on State program is fueled by its participants: a combination of professional and amatuer artists alike are invited to apply to have the opportunity to design and paint a piano for the event. Artists may either apply individually or in a team, ensuring one application per submission. Submissions must include digital copies of both past work and intended design for the piano, as well as a written explanation of the artist/s’ design. If chosen, artists will receive $200 to spend on supplies, and a work space will be provided. The deadline for applications closes August 17.
