Girls Inc. of Carpinteria celebrates its ninth annual Mariachi Encuentro, an evening of authentic Mexican food, music and culture, all benefitting the 600 young girls that Girls Inc. of Carpinteria serves. With national status since 1945, Girls Inc. has strived to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold—the organization’s three main pillars. Through research-based efforts, Girls Inc. provides girls ages 6 through 18 with programming ranging from STEM to financial literacy to leadership and advocacy and more.
In addition to an exquisite dinner, guests will enjoy live entertainment from several musical groups. Headlining the evening is California’s premier Mariachi ensemble, Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar, a group founded in 1994 by Jaime “El Pollo” Cuéllar. What began as a privately run community youth group, evolved into a highly acclaimed ensemble that has shared the stage with Latin Grammy Award winning artist, Alejandro Fernandez and the Latin American music legend, Juan Gabriel.
Serenading the crowd during dinner is Grupo Bella, an all-female band that adds their own modern twist to traditional Mariachi music. Each of the women, all who have worked on Grammy Award winning or nominated albums, contribute their own unique style to help produce the group’s diverse sound.
Ballet Folklorico de Los Angeles, only recently founded in 2011 by Kareli Montoya, has already established itself as the nation’s premier Mexican folk dance company. The dance company has performed in world-class venues including the Greek Theater, the Santa Barbara Bowl and the Staples Center, but they are scaling down for Mariachi Encuentro. At the Girls Inc. of Carpinteria campus, a smaller venue, guests will enjoy an intimate performance by the world class dancers.
“Mariachi Encuentro is one of our favorite events of the year,” says John Cerda, a member of the Girls Inc. of Carpinteria board of trustees and the event’s co-chair. “I’m personally very passionate about Mariachi music and enjoy the opportunity to share it with the community while giving back to Girls Inc’s mission of inspiring girls to be strong, smart and bold.”
Mariachi Encuentro takes place on May 13, at 4:45 p.m. at the Girls Inc. of Carpinteria Campus, 5315 Foothill Rd., Carpinteria. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit girlsinc-carp.org.
