Listen to the Carolina Chocolate Drops as they ease the gap between the 1930s and today by bringing a modern sizzle to the proud African-American string band tradition at 8 p.m. on May 8 in UCSB’s Campbell Hall.

The Durham, North Carolina-based band revels in the currents running through blues, country and bluegrass. The band was mostly a tribute to old-time fiddler and songster Joe Thompson, and the group aimed to bring the old-timey music of the Carolinas’ southern Piedmont region back out into dance halls and public places. With raw fiddles, powerful voices, banjos, jugs and vernacular percussion, the Grammy-winning quartet comes together for a “rollicking, revelatory” (The New York Times), down-home revival. The Carolina Chocolate Drops will play old favorites and new selections from their forthcoming album.
