The 90th annual “Old Spanish Days” Fiesta is well on its way to another strong event. This year’s El Presidente Dennis F. Rickard announced his intentions for this year’s Fiesta and upcoming events. First up is La Primavera on Sunday, May 18, followed by a costume sale on July 20.
Rickard is the great great grandson of Don Jose De La Guerra y Noriega, the last commandante of the Santa Barbara Presidio. Since it’s the 90th anniversary of Old Spanish Days, Rickard aims to honor his ancestors’ achievements and contribution to the Fiesta by focussing on heritage and rejoicing in the 90-year legacy.
The poster and pin for Old Spanish Days will be revealed at La Primavera. Also expect dancing, music and food to celebrate the unveiling. To purchase tickets for La Primavera, click here.
This year’s Old Spanish Days celebration appreciates the Spanish history of Santa Barbara by combining historical role-playing and family fun. There is always a Spirit of Fiesta, and this year the title was given to Talia Ortega Vestal. The Junior Spirit of Fiesta is Natalie Mowers.
This year especially, expect lots of ice cream as McConnell’s has signed on to be a sponsor. Also, be on the lookout for a ship called The Pilgrim, which will be docked in the harbor. It was a sailing brig in 1834 and an important historical relic. Sponsorship is also at an all-time high, reports Segundo Presidente J.C. Gordon, ensuring a successful Fiesta. This year it will take place July 30 – August 3.
