The Artful Recluse Exhibition Catalogue Receives 2014 CAA Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award
The Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA) was recently honored with the Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award by the College Art Association (CAA) in the category of catalogues produced by smaller museums, libraries, and collections. The SBMA publication receiving this prestigious award was The Artful Recluse: Painting, Poetry, and Politics in Seventeenth-Century China, published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same title and on view at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art October 20, 2012 – January 20, 2013 and at Asia Society in New York March 6 – June 2, 2013.
The catalogue was edited by SBMA Elizabeth Atkins Curator of Asian Art Susan Tai and professor of at the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) Peter Sturman, and includes essays by professors Timothy Brook from the University of British Columbia, Jonathan Chaves from George Washington University, Jonathan Hay from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University (NYU), and Hui-shu Lee from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Additional contributors included 18 graduate students from UCSB, UCLA, and NYU under the guidance of their professors.
