March 9–10, Sat. 8 p.m., Sun. 3 p.m. Santa Barbara Choral Society with Mozart and Beethoven
A Family Masterpiece
Author George Santayana once said, “The family is one of nature’s masterpieces” but what about when family members unite to perform masterpieces? Recently reviewed as “pulsing with energy, rhythm and sonic power” the Santa Barbara Choral Society continues their 65th anniversary season with a collaboration of family talent in the upcoming “Masterworks” concert. Celebrating her 20th anniversary as Artistic Director and Conductor JoAnne Wasserman will lead members of the Choral Society through one of the Mozart’s greatest compositions: the Grand Mass in C Minor is a mass on a very large scale with four soloists, a double chorus, and a large orchestra.
The second half of the concert opens with Mozart’s Regina Coeli after which rising star concert pianist and son of JoAnne, Dr. Alexander Wasserman joins the chorus and orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy.
The concerts are this Saturday March 9 at 8p.m. and Sunday March 10 at 3 p.m. at the San Roque Catholic Church – 3200 Calle Cedro, Santa Barbara. Ticketholders are also welcome to attend the pre-concert lecture by musicologist and composer Dr. Stephen Dombek. Lectures for this SB Choral Society “Masterworks” concert will begin at 7:15 pm (March 9) and 2:15 pm (March 10).
Tickets are available online at www.sbchoral.org and at Chaucer’s Books or by calling 805/965-6577.
