The butcher, the baker and possibly even the candlestick maker will soon be found under one roof at the corner of Chapala and Victoria streets downtown.
Regional wines, organic produce, sustainable artisan foods and other locally sourced delicacies will all be available at the new Santa Barbara Public Market. Currently under construction, this delicious addition to the area opens in June.
The prime site—right in the heart and soul of Santa Barbara’s cultural and performing arts area and inside the historic El Pueblo Viejo Landmark District—has a long history of feeding the neighborhood, beginning in the early 1930s as a Safeway Market and most recently as a Vons grocery store.
With an eye toward a sustainable future, this vibrant new neighborhood market and gathering destination integrates many environmentally friendly features, as it highlights local purveyors and offers opportunities to feast on the creations of up-and-coming resident chefs.
Also simmering on the site is Alma Del Pueblo, a 37-unit modern residential development currently under construction with an eye toward LEED Platinum certification. We’ll keep you posted as this exciting project develops. Meanwhile, click here to see a video of the project’s mural on the move.
