A win for women everywhere! Gutsy Gals Inspire Me, a Santa Barbara-based multimedia company that celebrates innovative and intra-preneurial women, has been awarded the Myra P. Sadker Award from the Career Technical Education Equity Council for their film The Improbable Journey of Berta Benz. Featuring stunning high-definition animation, this powerful film features Bertha Benz, the first person to ever drive more than a mile.

The story was inspired by the children’s book “Berta Benz and the Motorwagen” and is based on the first-ever long distance road trip in 1888, which changed the automobile industry and ultimately altered the course of human transportation. Berta Benz, wife of Karl Benz, of Mercedes Benz and inventor of the Motorwagen, defies the rules to prove her husband’s invention was not folly, but exciting and shockingly innovative.

Deborah Hutchison, delighted to accept the award, believes in the spirit of Berta Benz. “Berta Benz is an incredible role model for women and the young of heart… Actually, she is an amazing role model for anyone who pushed the envelope beyond a dream.” Hutchison hopes that by telling Benz’s story, girls and others will be inspired to remain courageous and act with confidence toward their own destinies.

Directed by Keith English and executive-produced by Phyllis de Picciotto, founder of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, with original music by Mark Henderson, The Improbable Journey of Berta Benz is an enjoyable and educational experience.
