Do you believe in magic? On Saturday, November 17, at 8 p.m. the Ojai Art Center Theater presents Mark Haslam in the world premiere of The Secret Class, a splendid and intriguing story about how magic secrets are passed on and how performers are nurtured.
Presented by two Magic Castle veterans, the one-man show will be performed by Haslam, written in collaboration with the former head of the Castle’s research library Gordon Bean. Original music will be provided by Andy Street, who has done numerous Ojai ACT musicals in the past.
Street describes Haslam as “one of the world’s most talented close-up magicians.” He also says that he “transports even the most jaded audience members into a place of intelligent wit and inexplicable events.”
Deciding this show should be about where magic comes from, Haslam and Bean crafted a narrative based on how Haslam first learned the art of magic through a combination of reading and solitary practice. They include plenty of opportunities to showcase Mark’s incredibly entertaining sleight of hand.
The show also includes cinematic images by Marcus Dillistone of the fictional hotel in which the show’s teenage hero learns his craft, also including a fascinating appreciation of the protagonist’s early role model Harry Houdini.
As Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band says in a favorite quote of Haslam and Bean, “Having been some days in preparation, a splendid time is guaranteed for all.”
