UCSB Arts & Lectures presents the Santa Barbara debut of the acclaimed dance company, Shen Wei Dance Arts, performing on Wednesday, November 28 at 8 p.m.
The Granada Theatre will host this surely captivating event, described as “delicious, delightful to the senses and spirit-lifting” by Dance Magazine. Shen Wei, best known for his role as lead choreographer for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Bejing Olympics, is committed to incorporating innovative dance forms into his pieces, beautifully weaving together Chinese opera, painting, dance and music.
The Santa Barbara debut consist of two pieces, one of which is set to Igor Stravinsky‘s remarkable music, Rite of Spring, creating a narrative of moment that is in step with the original landmark piece. The second piece, Folding, involves highly stylized movement and incorporates Tavener and Tibetan Buddhist chants.
The concept, costumes, set and make-up design of both pieces are by Artistic Director Shen Wei, part of what may make this event so “delightful to the senses…”
