Even if you haven’t seen Argo in theaters yet, there’s no doubt that you’ve heard about the Oscar-buzz, gripping story line and triple-threat Ben Affleck leading the way as producer, director and actor. The film’s star has also won the hearts of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and will be honored with the 28th annual festival’s most prestige award, the Modern Master Award. Affleck will receive the award at a tribute on Saturday, January 26 at the Arlington Theatre.
The Modern Master Award, the most sought-after and highest-honoring award of the festival, honors an individual whose multi-faceted accomplishments have enriched the culture of film and beyond. Affleck’s dedication to his craft and the risk-taking, thought-provoking subject matter of his newest film made him a clear contender for this award.
Argo chronicles a dangerous covert operation to rescue six imprisoned American hostages in 1979’s Iran. With a star-studded cast and Affleck behind and in front of the camera, Argo has earned high praise from many highly respected critics, and its awards and accollades are hoped to increase come Oscar season.
Actor, producer, director and Academy Award-winning writer (Good Will Hunting)—there seems to be little that Affleck can’t accomplish.
“Affleck has come into his own as a multi-dimensional artist with Argo,” states Roger Durling, SBIFF’s executive director. “He embodies what the Modern Master Award is all about.”
Tickets for the Modern Master Award festivities are on sale now, and can be purchased here. Argo is also playing at a number of Santa Barbara theaters, so be sure to catch the flick before the Film Festival takes over town.
Congratulations to Ben Affleck on this great honor, and we’ll see you all at the Film Festival!
