Steven Gilbar loves books— so much so that he used to make a living editing literary anthologies. Nowadays, Gilbar uses books for a different hobby, and in doing so, has to destroy some of the things he loves most.
Gilbar’s Bookscapes, collages of landscapes made from the pages of books, opens this weekend, September 14 at Porch in Carpinteria, and runs through October 24. Expect fields made from book-binding materials and lakes of frayed paper.
Gilbar’s Bookscapes aren’t his only pieces worth visiting this month. As mentioned in the fall issue of SEASONS, Gilbar’s collection of State Street graffiti photography is on exhibit at Gallery 827. Check out the article in our magazine, on newsstands now.
For those wishing to meet the jovial mixed-media artist, an artist reception will be held on September 15 at Porch from 3-5 p.m. Head on over for an evening with the literary artist, and see if you can identify what part of the book was used for the bookscapes’ different natural elements.
