Musically Inspired: Pianos on State and Instrument Drive 4 Youth

Posted on Nov 12 by SEASONS Magazine

If you missed 1st Thursday this month or the New Noise Festival, don’t worry because you can still listen to the sweet sounds of pianos on state through November 13.

Sponsored in part by Santa Barbara Beautiful and Cox Communications, this is the second annual event made possible by the collaborative efforts of the Santa Barbara Bowl, Notes for Notes, Santa Barbara Education Foundation, Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative and Santa Barbara County Arts Commission. Pianos will continue to play on State Street and each one is also a piece of art unto itself, as local Santa Barbara artists created unique looks for the individual pianos.

Pianos are available for musical exploration, impromptu play and planned performances  through November 13, beginning at 10 a.m. and going until 9 p.m.  Amateur and professional musicians alike will be scheduled to perform and the public is invited to sit down and play during non-scheduled hours.

This ongoing event is also raising awareness for the 3rd Annual Instrument Drive 4 Youth. The Instrument Drive is another wonderful collaboration between the Santa Barbara Bowl, Notes for Notes, and the Santa Barbara Education Foundation, collecting new and used music instruments and equipment from the community for disbursement to young musicians through the SB School District and non-profit organizations. More than 200 instruments have been collected and distributed to local youth through the previous Instrument Drives.

This year, be one of those contributors and donate an instrument that you no longer play, because you know it will only just keep collecting dust as it sits in your home unused. Donors are encouraged to include a personal not for the new owner.

Drop off your contribution at one of the following: Nick Rail Music (2801 De la Vina St.), Business First Bank (1035 State St.), Santa Barbara Education Foundation (1300 St, Ste. 203) and Santa Barbara Sheet Music (1036 Santa Barbara St.) during this month of November. Instruments will also be collected at the Youth Symphony’s Winter Concert at the Lobero Theatre on November 13, at 3 p.m. Your instruments will be donated to local school and arts organization working with kids whom will learn and enjoy the gift of music. For more information or to make a cash donation toward instruments, call 805/284-9125 or visit
