March 24 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Center for Successful Aging presents Sophisticated Ladies, an entertaining tribute to the Assistance League of Santa Barbara for their 70 years of service to the community. The tribute features Santa Barbara jazz conductor and musician Ike Jenkins and his amazing 20 piece Santa Barbara Big Band (all of whom are music teachers).
Inspired by the great Duke Ellington and Count Basie, Ike Jenkins is forever trying to achieve structured creativity and musical expression through Big Bands and Jazz Choirs and, whenever possible, the combination of the two. Jenkins is semi-retired after over 40 years of teaching in public schools, but is currently Director of the Monday Madness Jazz Band at Santa Barbara City College. He is an adjudicator and Clinician for High School and College Jazz Festivals throughout the state. His Jazz Bands and Jazz Choirs have won such competitions as the Reno International Jazz Festival, the North Texas Jazz Festival and the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival. They have performed throughout Europe in Concerts and Jazz Festivals and his awards include two Crystal Apple Awards in Santa Barbara County, Santa Barbara Independent Local Hero Award, Hope Award for Education, and Santa Barbara Educator of the year. In 2011, he was inducted into the California Alliance Jazz Hall of Fame and in 2016, he was inducted into the Dos Pueblos High School Hall of Fame.
The show, directed by Rod Lathim, is sure to be an inspiring and fun-filled night of entertainment.
