Gershwin’s An American in Paris & Debussy’s La mer
July 14 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm$40 – $100
Academy Festival Orchestra conducted by Stephane Deneve and presented by Music Academy of the West performing Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Guillaume Connesson’s Les Trois Cities de Lovecraft- American Premiere, Gershwin’s An American in Paris, and Debussy’s La mer.
The Academy Festival Orchestra is comprised of approximately 100 of the Music Academy of the West fellows, the talented young musicians who attend the annual Summer Festival on full scholarship. The orchestra’s members are drawn from America’s leading schools and conservatories, and represent the nation’s finest young musicians. The orchestra performs each summer under the baton of such eminent conductors as Alan Gilbert, Peter Oundjian, Leonard Slatkin, Osmo Vänskä, Matthew Aucoin, Thomas Adés, and Christoph von Dohnanyi; this year’s conductors include Stephane Denéve and the London Symphony Orchestra’s Elim Chan. For more than a decade, the orchestra has been prepared for performance by Larry Rachleff of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Musicians from the orchestra recently participated in a four-year partnership with the New York Philharmonic, by which each season ten of them were selected by audition to train and perform with the orchestra in New York City. Distinguished members of the Music Academy faculty, including Jorja Fleezanis, Richie Hawley, and Dennis Michel, often rehearse and perform alongside the orchestra. Several Academy Festival Orchestra concerts have been webcast live and are now available for streaming on the Music Academy website.
Tickets may also be available from Music Academy of the West at 805/969-8787 or www.musicacademy.org/festival.
