You could say that creative director, graphic designer and fine artist Jay Schwartz is an idea man of sorts. Perhaps it’s the name of his company, IdeaWork Studios, or the fact that he has produced campaigns for clients with names such as Hard Rock, Caesar’s Palace, Eddie Bauer and Yahoo! Or it could be his incredible ability to create exquisite, transient large-scale works of art, using only homemade chalk and the ground we walk on.

Schwartz trained as a fine artist at UCSB before deciding that the art business wasn’t for him and going into graphic design. After learning the theoretical and technical knowledge behind graphic design at the Art Center and working some jobs in type-setting and production, Schwartz and his friend collaborated to form IdeaWork, a branding, marketing and creative company that has since grown into a cross-country firm working with some of the biggest names in hospitality, nightlife, fitness and more.

But before all of that, there was I Madonnari, 1992.

You won’t have to wait until July to move to the sweet sounds of Tony Ybarra because Fiesta has come early! Throughout the month of May, look out for the pre-sale of Ybarra’s sixth album, Fiesta!, releasing June 1st, and get into the swing of the Fiesta season.

Finding a space where the sounds of Ybarra’s Latin guitar haven’t resonated is challenging. From earning a Masters in Music at USC and teaching UCSB, Westmont and SBCC students to being frequently featured on The Tonight Show, Dexter and Turner Classic Movies (not to mention playing for President Obama and Oprah), Ybarra’s talent is unbeatable.

As the premier music maestrofor Old Spanish Days, happening July 31-August 4, we will have the chance to see him live at the Santa Barbara Mission, Rancho La Patera and Stow House, Santa Barbara Zoo, Santa Barbara Historical Museum and El Paseo from Thursday to Sunday. Viva la Fiesta!

Ocean Ranch Organics

When private chef and caterer Kim Redman’s clients began clamoring for her tasty homemade granola, she obliged by launching a line of her crunchelicious culinary creation. Now packaged in eye-catching bags with a colorful illustration reminiscent of vintage fruit-packing labels, Ocean Ranch Organics (805/455-9852) granolas are available all over California from Bakersfield to Los Angeles. But it’s what’s inside those bags that makes me sit up and grab my spoon.

“I wanted to make granolas that really have a distinct flavor,” says Redman. And that she did. Handmade with all-natural and organic ingredients in small batches, Ocean Ranch Organics granola comes in five flavor-packed varieties: Honey Sesame, Meyer Lemon Blue, Oaxacan Chocolate, Pomegranate and Cranberry Orange. Several of the flavors were inspired by what Redman grows on her Carpinteria ranch, the Honey Sesame echoes her fondness for Japanese cuisine, and the chocolate version grew out of the several years she spent in Oaxaca and southern Mexico. ART | ARCHITECTURE ON FILM Series Returns to UCSB’s Pollock Theater

Last year’s ART | ARCHITECTURE ON FILM series is getting a sequel! Due to popular demand, this four-date film series has returned for a second year to UC Santa Barbara’s state-of-the-art Pollock Theater, where it will reveal the stories behind some of the most fascinating art, artists and architects of our time.

The series will continue this Sunday, April 28, with Andrew Shea’s Portrait of Wally. Tracing the history of Egon Schiele’s eponymous painting, which was seized from a Jewish art dealer fleeing Vienna for her life before resurfacing at MoMA more than half a century later, Shea’s gripping documentary posits a rapturous picture of “Portrait of Wally.”

On May 5, filmgoers will gain insight into the creative process of Gerhard Richter, one of the world’s greatest and most innovative living painters. In Corinna Belz’s fly-on-the-wall documentary, the aptly named Gerhard Richter Painting, the artist mixes layer upon layer of bold colors, smears the paint with a massive squeegee and scrapes away at the canvas to create a sequence of large-scale abstract compositions.

Closing out the ART | ARCHITECTURE ON FILM series is Murray Grigor’s Infinite Space: The Architecture of John Lautner. Screening on May 19, Infinite Space narrates visionary genius John Lautner’s mission to create “architecture that has no beginning and no end.” In Grigor’s documentary, the renowned architectural filmmaker unpacks Lautner’s polarizing legacy and explores a number of his dramatic creations, including L.A.’s Chemosphere and Elrod House in Palm Springs.

For more information, or for tickets to each screening, visit the official website for UCSB Arts & Lectures. All films show at 3 p.m. and include post-screening receptions for ticketholders ages 21 and over.

The Great Recession: Your Questions Answered at This Year’s Economic Summit

We all remember 2008: banks failing, stock prices falling and wide-spread panic stretching across the U.S. Chances are you or someone you know has been greatly affected by what is called “the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.” In the midst of all this chaos, several questions may have come to mind: How will this affect me? What does this mean for the future of our national and global economies? Why did the government choose to grant a $700 billion bailout to banks, firms and automakers rather than to its own citizens?

If any of this sounds familiar, then you won’t want to miss the captivating and insightful discussions at the 32nd Annual Santa Barbara County Economic Summit. Presented by UCSB Economic Forecast Project and UCSB Arts & Lectures, the event will take place at The Granada Theatre on Thursday, May 2, from 8:30–11:30 a.m. Continue reading ‘The Great Recession: Your Questions Answered at This Year’s Economic Summit’

David Sedaris Returns for Another Evening in Santa Barbara

It’s truly lucky that we folks in Santa Barbara are on good terms with David Sedaris, because if he were so inclined to direct his satirical, cleverly subtle invective our way, we would inevitably be ruined by his brutal wit, having to forever suffer smirks and snickers from all our friends. Luckily, our relationship with the best-selling humorist appears to be intact because by popular demand, he returns to The Arlington Theatre on April 30 for An Evening with David Sedaris, presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures.

Sedaris’s appearance at Arlington Theatre is heralded by his new release, “Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls,” due out on April 23. The critical consensus regarding his previous works is decidedly positive, and avid readers of Sedaris are armed with high expectations for his next release. If previous Evenings are any indication, even veterans of Sedaris will find their appreciation for his prose (both fiction and non-fiction) amplified by the subtle nuances in tone and characterization revealed only in the candid, performance environment provided by a stage readingIt’s also worth noting that, like most witty humorists, his material can get edgy, so it’s a safe bet to leave the kids at home for this one.

To wrap up, come join UCSB Arts & Lectures for An Evening with David Sedaris on April 30. After the performance, a booth will be set up where the author will hold a book signing; you can also purchase his works there if you’re a new fan or if the show converted you. Tickets can be purchased on the UCSB Arts & Lectures website, at Ticketmaster or by phone at Arlington Theatre.
