When you hear the word “ballet”, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Chances are it probably isn’t rock ‘n’ roll. Well, prepare to have your mind blown when choreographer Peter Pucci and State Street Ballet present an exciting new ballet set to the music of the legendary Paul Simon entitled Dream On By.

Emmy –award-winning choreographer Robert Sund brings the classic tale of love and magic to State Street Ballet. Tchaikovsky’s riveting score combine with lavish sets, masks and costumes to make this production an enchanting experience.
We all know the story: a beautiful young woman sacrifices her freedom to save her father by locking herself away with a cruel beast, but soon the beast’s true heart is revealed and the two live happily ever after. See the beloved story come to life as State Street Ballet brings Beauty and the Beast to the Lobero Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10.
The ballet, based on the original French fairytale, features choreography by Emmy Award-winner Robert Sund and principal dancers Kate Kadow and Ryan Camou. The beautiful set designs, enchanting costumes and breathtaking score by Pyoter Tchaikovsky truly make for a magical evening.
State Street Ballet is known for its innovation and cutting-edge performances that still retain grace and sophistication. The ballet melds facets of the original fairytale, the 1946 film by Jean Cocteau and its own modern twists on the Lobero stage.
For those who enjoyed the company’s performance with Santa Barbara Symphony during the Firebird Suite, Beauty and the Beast is sure to serve as an excellent follow-up.

Also called California Impression, this style of painting was adapted from French Impressionistic techniques and seeks to reproduce the natural light and beauty of this state.
The Museum of Ventura County’s Agriculture Museum debuts a collection of contemporary quilts inspired by farms, farmers, flowers and fresh fruits and vegetables. The exhibit will display 20 unique pieces contributed by 15 quileters from the Ventura and Santa Barbara areas.

Bruce Whitehouse, professor of Anthropology at Lehigh University, discusses how the country of Mali, in Africa’s western Sahel region, experienced an army coup. Just last year, the once stable democracy lost its northern regions to separatist and Islamist rebels. Whitehouse traces the origins of Mali’s crisis and discusses prospects for restoring peace and democracy in that region.

For the first time in its 18-year history, Santa Barbara’s State Street Ballet presents Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s holiday masterpiece The Nutcracker, a classic tale of adventure, fantasy, romance and the triumph of good over evil. With full symphony orchestra accompaniment from the Opera San Luis Obispo Orchestra, Brian Asher Alhadeff conducts the genius of Tchaikovsky. The Granada Theatre lights up for all three of its performances: Saturday, December 22 at 2 p.m. followed by an evening production at 7:30 p.m. The next day (Sunday, December 23) hosts The Nutcracker at 2:00 p.m.
A full cast of Gustafson Dance students will accompany State Street Ballet’s professional dancers throughout the show. The beloved Clara will be played alternately by students Julia DePaoli and Lily Conroy. Soloists are Kate Kadow as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Ryan Camou as the Nutcracker Prince.
Join the State Street Ballet inside the Granada Theatre in enjoying the choreography of artistic director Rodney Gustafson as well as the company’s Choreographer and Ballet Masters, Gary McKenzie and Marina Fliagina. Costume design is by A. Christina Giannini and Anaya Cullen.

In music, appoggiatura (Italian for “to lean”) is a note of long or short duration that sometimes creates a dissonance before resolving into a main note. And so it is with the play by James Still: what begins on a cool rainy day inside an old-world hotel room in Venice ends on a hot sunny day outside at the Roman Forum in Rome. Appoggiatura is a play about an American family finding itself by completely losing itself. Italy is a good place to do just that.

Dr. Alisa LaGamma, the curator for Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will give a lecture about sub-Saharan cultural traditions that were inspired by prominent figures highlighted in the Metropolitan’s exhibition of African art in 2011. She will focus on eight artistic centers in West and Central Africa from the 13th to early 20th centuries.

After years of designing her own patterns and machine knit training, Susannah Lewis-O’Dea eventually became the Lizwear knitwear designer at Liz Claiborne in New York. Since moving to Summerland years later, she has not stopped knitting and is pleased to share her own line of knitted products under the SusannahO’ label.
