Memorial Day is a special day set aside for to reflect and honor our country’s past and the lives that have given us the gift of a free nation. Consequently, there is no better way to remember than with a foundation whose motto is “Never Forget,” honoring a war often called “The Forgotten War.”

The Pierre Claeyssens Veteran’s Museum (PCVM) Foundation wants everyone to remember that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the armistice for the Korean War.  This upcoming Memorial Day, the PCVM Foundation and Korean War Veterans Association are honoring those who fought and gave their lives for this country on May 27 at 10 a.m. at the Santa Barbara Cemetery.

This is the first local commemoration of the Korean War and the first time in many years that this day has been honored with a truly memorable event in Santa Barbara. The ceremony will feature keynote speakers Brigadier General Fred Lopez and John Ramieri, president of the Korean War Vets Association. In addition to guest speakers, live music and bagpipes, a grand finale flyover of four vintage airplanes performing the “Missing Man” formation will make for the most memorable Memorial Day ceremony Santa Barbara has experienced.

For more information on how to join the commemoration or donate to the foundations, please call 805/966-1660 or visit the foundation website.

Sarah & Roger Chrisman Give $1 Million to Endow Executive Directorship of The Granada Theatre

Sarah and Roger Chrisman, known throughout the Central Coast for their philanthropy and undying support of local artistry, firmly believe in the uniting powers of art and culture. Last month, the Chrismans bolstered this sentiment by bestowing a visionary gift of $1 million unto the Santa Barbara Center for the Performing Arts (SBCPA), which owns and operates the historic Granada Theatre.

With this endowment, the Chrismans will fund a permanent Executive Directorship for The Granada, making it possible for the SBCPA to not only ensure the best leadership possible for the theatre but to also strengthen partnerships within the local performing arts community.

Sarah has been the SBCPA’s board president since 2009 and, as a founding board member, has served the organization in various roles for more than a decade. She also has a place on the Board of Opera Santa Barbara, and works as the chief financial officer of the Warren and Katharine Schlinger Foundation, an L.A.-based nonprofit. Roger, who has served as director and commodore of Santa Barbara Yacht Club, also worked for several years as treasurer of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, where he still serves as a director. Both he and Sarah are the sole trustees of the Schlinger Chrisman Foundation.

“Sarah and Roger are both true visionaries,” says Kristi Newton, director of development for The Granada, in a written statement. “Their gift will help ensure the long-term sustainability and vitality of The Granada Theatre for the benefit of current and future generations.”

In addition to their million-dollar donation, the Chrismans have also helped acquire the Granada’s new Digital Cinema. This state-of-the-art digital projection system and 4K film experience is the first of its kind on California’s Central Coast, and will begin programming in the fall. Thanks to Sarah and Roger Chrisman, The Granada Theatre’s reputation as a centerpiece of Santa Barbara’s lively performing arts community will continue to flourish in the coming years.

Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café Receives 2013 Family Award

With the announcement of the 2013 Family Business Awards in Pacific Coast Business Times, oenophiles everywhere swelled with pride. The annual Family Business Awards recognize companies with two or more family members actively involved as owner-managers. One of these awards was bestowed upon Sam and Shawnda Marmorstein, owner-managers of Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café.

The restaurant (and its wine list) quickly outgrew its humble beginnings as a simple café in 1995. In 2001, the Marmorsteins added the Wine Merchant store, and the restaurant’s previously paltry two-item wine list expanded to encompass 500 wines.

Since then, Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café has continually provided the opportunity for fine dining (with great wine pairings!) to Santa Barbara County residents, acting as a distribution hub for the surrounding wine country vineyards.

Consider heading up San Marcos Pass and making a stop at Los Olivos Wine Merchant & Café for a delicious dinner and some wine pairings. According to founder and owner Sam Marmorstein, “When a guest walks through our doors, it is the job of every employee to make them feel like they are a guest in their own home.” Swing on through and see for yourself the service and atmosphere deserving of county recognition.

Realizing the Lifelong Dream: Center for Lifelong Learning

SBCC Center for Lifelong Learning LOGO_A (2)Imagine this: a volunteer-based educational program completely free from government funding. Sounds too good to be true, right?

Because of state budget cuts, Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) had to cut the adult education program, but the upside of this is that, in September, SBCC will embark on a brand-new enterprise: SBCC Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL), a new prototype for education.

Spearheaded by Dr. Jack Freelander and newly appointed executive director Andrew Harper, CLL is becoming a reality, thanks to the devotion of the people of Santa Barbara. “Let me tell you, I have never seen a college supported by a community with such a genuine and driving passion for education. The CLL will offer adults of all ages in the Santa Barbara community diverse and affordable lifelong learning opportunities,” says Harper.
