Food is one of the many joys in life. It’s delicious, it’s essential for survival and it’s a great way to bring people together. That being said, food can also have negative effects on our health and well-being. On Friday, May 24 at 7 p.m., experience An Evening with Dr. Will Tuttle and learn how to make positive changes in your eating habits that will promote wellness, encourage wisdom and benefit our planet.
Dr. Tuttle is known for The World Peace Diet, his internationally best-selling book that discusses the connections between our culture, our food and our individual and collective lives. His lecture will be held at the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara (USSB) and is co-sponsored by the National Museum of Animals & Society, USSB and Go Vegan Santa Barbara. This insightful presentation will focus on eating for spiritual health and social harmony while teaching you how to be healthy AND save the planet. There will also be a discussion, question and answer section and a book signing following the lecture.
An acclaimed educator, author, pianist and composer, Dr. Tuttle has lectured and performed across North America and Europe. He is a Dharma Master in the Zen tradition and is the recipient of the Courage of Conscience Award. In addition to his best-selling book, he has also created seven CD albums of piano music devoted to cultural healing and awakening.
Don’t miss this chance to learn how to get the most of your dining experiences while helping our planet at the same time. You wont regret it!

Australia and America (or, as the internet seems to call them these days, Ameristralia) are teaming up at SOhO Restaurant and Music Club tonight, May 20, with Atlas Genius and The Postelles taking the stage at 9 p.m. for a night of melodic memories and dance-worthy jams.
Fresh off the bus from KROQ’s Weenie Roast, Aussie band Atlas Genius will be jumping right into this tour with The Postelles (The Colourist will also be performing), with our town as their first stop. Atlas Genius’s song “Trojans,” heard all over the radio, is just one of their catchy tunes from When It Was Now currently on our summer playlist. Check out their song “If So” below.
Recently having released their sophomore album titled …And It Shook Me, The Postelles are an NY-based band who have toured with the likes of Fun., Vampire Weekend and now, Atlas Genius. Daniel Balk, lead singer of the band, pens their sound as a “rock ‘n’ roll catchy feel, with a nice melody,” describing himself as “a fan of songs that get stuck in your head.” Listen to their song “Heavy Eyes” and see for yourself.
Balk describes their new album (it was released April 23) as “more warm-sounding,” and calls their style one with a “plug-in-and-play” mentality. Having previously toured in L.A., San Francisco, Santa Ana and San Diego, the band brings its sound to Santa Barbara for the first time (but, we hope, not their last).
Although the show tonight is sold out, Atlas Genius will return later this year for the KJEE Summer Roundup on September 18. Tickets go on sale May 31st.
Add Atlas Genius and The Postelles to your feel-good beachy-days playlist, and if you weren’t quick enough to snag a ticket for tonight, look for more shows from them in Santa Barbara in the future. We hope (and part of us knows) they won’t be able to resist coming back.

Although the Amgen Tour of California has come and gone, the wheel print it has left on our memories will not soon be forgotten—or the economic print at that.
According to AEG, an estimated $100 million of positive economic impact occurred over the eight-day bicycle race, traveling 750 miles throughout the Golden State. In our town, which hosted the finish of Stage 4 and the beginning of Stage 5 of the race, there is an estimated minimum of $160,000 of revenue from just lodging the bicyclists, staffers and organizers of the race.
The cyclists also noted that they found Santa Barbara’s beauty and gorgeous weather to be a wonderful way to finish that stage of the race. Hopefully Santa Barbara will act as a destination for Amgen races for years to come!

Benton’s “Hollywood” by Jay Schwartz, courtesy of the artist
You could say that creative director, graphic designer and fine artist Jay Schwartz is an idea man of sorts. Perhaps it’s the name of his company, IdeaWork Studios, or the fact that he has produced campaigns for clients with names such as Hard Rock, Caesar’s Palace, Eddie Bauer and Yahoo! Or it could be his incredible ability to create exquisite, transient large-scale works of art, using only homemade chalk and the ground we walk on.
Schwartz trained as a fine artist at UCSB before deciding that the art business wasn’t for him and going into graphic design. After learning the theoretical and technical knowledge behind graphic design at the Art Center and working some jobs in type-setting and production, Schwartz and his friend collaborated to form IdeaWork, a branding, marketing and creative company that has since grown into a cross-country firm working with some of the biggest names in hospitality, nightlife, fitness and more.
But before all of that, there was I Madonnari, 1992.

Mystery in Masterpieces is back by popular demand! The Women’s Board of Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA) is bringing back the unique and popular fundraising event, Mystery in Masterpieces, on Saturday, June 1 from 6–9 p.m. at SBMA.
The elegant evening includes out-witting the devious clue master and competitive sleuthing in high style surrounded by great works of art—not to mention fine wine, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres that will stimulate your inner detective, helping you follow the clues hidden in the masterpieces and ultimately unravel the mystery. If your detective devices triumph, you’ll win some exceptional prizes!
All proceeds will go to the SBMA Women’s Board, which since 1951 has contributed to the museum’s programs, produced a broad array of cultural activates and purchased works of art for the permanent collection.
The event is black-tie optional, but wit is mandatory! To purchase tickets or for additional information regarding the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Women’s Board, visit its website.

“Honoring and remembering our mothers” was the theme for the 12th annual Mother’s Day Luncheon benefit for Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care, and as always, it truly was a lovely event.

Mistress of Ceremonies Catherine Remak shared a lovely remembrance of her late mother, and auctioneer Andrew Firestone did a great job with the live auction, which included an exclusive tour of the Reagan Ranch and Rancho Del Cielo, a private dinner for ten with Chef Dario Furlati of Ca’ Dario and tickets to the American Idol finale, among other high ticket items.

A delicious lunch at the Coral Casino was followed by moving tributes to moms.

Charles Browning remembered growing up on a Texas farm with his mother, the late Laverne Browning, saying “all who met her fell under her spell. And today we are still spellbound by her.” Laverne passed away in 2011 at 97 years young.
The still very vital and vibrant Barbara Ireland—who is probably best known for The Barbara Ireland Walk for Breast Caner Research, which just marked its 13th year—also received lovely tributes from her daughters Mary and Kathy, as well as lots of proud smiles from granddaughter Chloe.
“The thing about mom is, she always told us that it demonstrates great strength and toughness to choose to be kind,” said Kathy, whose older sister Cynthia also sent a loving written tribute to her mom.
