Catherine Gee not only runs The Arts Fund for Santa Barbara, but you might say she’s a client, too. Gee, whose name is pronounced like the expression of wonder, came here less than five years ago as an arts consultant working for Morris Squire’s Rumble Art Show, with interests so diverse that they put the word “eclectic” to shame. The daughter of a professional artist who emigrated from Mainland China, Gee studied Spanish, violin, fine arts, art history and writing at Sewanee (University of the South). While later working for Squire and Summerland Winery—since she wasn’t busy enough—she heard about the Individual Artists Award program—which The Arts Fund gave each year from a different art form or genre—applied and won honorable mention. Artistically Aquatic: The Arts Fund Presents “Big Splash”

Piece by Blakeney Sanford, courtesy of the Arts Fund

Providing surfers with epic waves and beach lovers with a salty paradise, the ocean serves as an artistic muse and inspiration for The Arts Fund‘s exhibit, Big Splash, which opens with a public reception on Friday, April 5 from 5–7 p.m.

An exhibition featuring large-scale works with aquatic themes, Big Splash showcases artists Benjamin Anderson, Cayetana Conrad, Blakeney Sanford and Rick Stich as they explore the ocean’s totality and beauty.

Curated by Catherine Gee and Nancy Gifford, Big Splash aims to immerse its viewers in an all-encapsulating experience. “The idea is for the viewer to enter a space with representational and abstract works with emphasis on the overwhelmingly large-scaled sizes,” says Gee.

The exhibit continues through Saturday, May 18, and admission is free! For more information, call 805/965-7321 or visit The Arts Fund’s website.

Santa Barbara’s Rainbow Restoration Begins!

We’ve all seen the dazzling square rainbow as we drive along Cabrillo Boulevard: Herbert Bayer’s Chromatic Gate, a Santa Barbara icon. This week, restoration of Bayer’s famous sculpture begins, an endeavor helmed by Santa Barbara County Arts Commission with Restore Our Rainbow Committee, Santa Barbara Arts Fund and many other community efforts and private contributors.

4.Chromatic Gate

Herbert Bayer’s Chromatic Gate, located along Cabrillo Boulevard

Over the years, Chromatic Gate has suffered extreme damage from our beachy climate, the bright colors fading and the surface corroding from the salty air. Those working to restore the sculpture will smooth and sand the metal and use special paint more fitted to endure the climate. Even after Chromatic Gate is returned to its full glory, SB Arts Commission hopes to build a maintenance fund dedicated to keeping Chromatic Gate beautiful in the years to come.

To promote Bayer’s works and awareness of Chromatic Gate, County Arts Commission is opening Herbert Bayer: Synthesis, an art exhibit in City Hall Gallery on Thursday, March 7 at 5-7 p.m.

For more info. on the restoration, contact Rita Ferri at 805/568-3994 or ferri@co.santa-barbara.ca.us.

Channing Peake Paintings Donated to SB County Arts Commission

Anne and Walon Green generously donated 10 Channing Peake paintings to Santa Barbara County Arts Commission. The paintings range from the powerful 1959 Horse and Man  oil on canvas to a 1985 energetic abstract gouache on paper, entitled Cosmic Pathway.

Collectively valued at $148,400, the County Arts Commission is “extremely grateful to the Greens for their generous gift to the County Arts Commission and the legacy it creates,” says Rita Ferri, visual arts coordinator/curator of collections for the County Arts Commission, who coordinated the acquisition, which was approved by the County Board of Supervisors earlier this week.
Channing Peake was a founding member of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art as well as a member of the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission for 10 years, calling Santa Ynez Valley his home despite his many travels. That being said, it is no surprise that Peake’s work colors the city of Santa Barbara. Peake’s Fiesta mural is featured  at the new Santa Barbara Airport terminal and the downtown Santa Barbara Public Library showcases his mural Don Quixote, a painting by which he collaborated with another Santa Barbara great, Howard Warshaw.
Peake’s name is often discussed alongside those of other greats such as Pablo Picasso, Rufino Tamayo, Rico Lebrun, Man Ray and Diego Rivera, and among other friends and artists with whom he shared thoughts on the arts. The Green’s gift will serve to increase Peake’s presence and legacy throughout Santa Barbara County,  though Peake is internationally renowned for his paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints and celebrated in many major museums throughout the country.
The recently gifted Peake paintings will be included in an exhibition at the Betteravia Gallery in Santa Maria in the new year, upon completion of the County Administration Building.

15 Receive SB County Arts Commission Enrichment Grant Awards

Purple Crayon Project’s “Keeping Art Alive in Local Public Schools” pilot program was one of the programs recently receiving grants from the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission.

Santa Barbara County Arts Commission recently approved 15 Community Arts Enrichment Grants for funding in amounts ranging from $600 to $2,750.

The Community Arts Enrichment (CAE) Grants intend to support artists, the arts and cultural organizations by funding projects and activities that enrich the lives of residents in Santa Barbara County.

“CAE grants have served as a catalyst for activating much needed arts and cultural programs and opportunities for greater community engagement particularly in the County’s rural and undeserved communities. In many cases, CAE grants have supported access to arts and arts education opportunities in area schools,” states Ginny Brush, Executive Director of the County Arts Commission.

Programs funded include support for a video/oral history program for youth in Los Alamos developed by Santa Ynez Valley People Helping People and the Purple Crayon Project‘s “Keeping Art Alive in Local Public Schools” pilot program. Grant funds will also give 1,800 underserved north county students in Guadalupe and Cuyama schools exposure to Boxtales Theatre Company‘s multi-cultural myths and folktales performances for free.

This is just a taste of the the community projects supported by this grant cycle. The next Grant Cycle will take place in the spring.

Nonprofit News and Briefs for Fall

Lobero Theatre Foundation kicked off a $5.2 million capital campaign, “Encore: Lobero,” designed to maintain the Lobero as a world-class performance venue and community arts resource. Campaign goals include the replacement of the 27-year-old-seats, ventilation and heating upgrades, ADA-compliance measures, expanding and updating the restrooms, and restoration of paint and architectural details. The most marked improvement will be the realization of architect George Washington Smith’s original concept for a level, more welcoming entry to the theater. Although part of the 1924 plans, the “Esplanade” was not completed, and the Lobero team is eager to realize this vision.

Coastal Housing Partnership (CHP), a nonprofit organization that helps employees of local companies realize the dream of home ownership through education programs and with benefits provided through a network of local partners, celebrates 25 years of service to the community. CHP has helped more than 10,000 local employees become homeowners.

The Restoration Rainbow Team

Lead gifts from Jacoby Family Trust and Mercedes Eichholz have catalyzed a campaign for the restoration of Herbert Bayer’s Chromatic Gate on Cabrillo Boulevard, the 21-foot-high rainbow that was erected in 1991. Bayer was considered by many to be the most celebrated international artist ever to live in Santa Barbara. Fundraising efforts have been energized by the formation of a new dynamic team co-chaired by Patty DeDominic and Gene Sinser, as well as the Restore Our Rainbow (ROR) committee, in conjunction with The Arts Fund. Those interested in contributing to the restoration may send tax-deductible donations to County Arts Commission, P.O. Box 2369, Santa Barbara, CA 93120. Checks should be made out to Santa Barbara County Arts Commission, with notations for “Restore our Rainbow.”

Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation is within $1.5 million of achieving the capital portion of the American Classic Campaign for the beloved venue’s renovation and restoration. Thanks to the generosity of more than 600 Santa Barbara individuals, foundations and businesses, over $35 million has been raised to-date. The Overlook— a new concessions and restrooms area high above the Bowl with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean—opens in September. By the end of 2014, the final elements—upgraded seating, box office and lower plaza—will be complete.

Form and Fragmentation are on the Menu for this September’s 1st Thursday

September’s First Thursday opens with an extensive gallery of 25 regional artists’ work, all offering an investigation of form, narrative and fragmentation. By discussing figurative elements as more than simply a sum of their parts, the collection, curated by Priscilla Bender-Shore, draws attention to specific parts of the human form.

Santa Barbara County Arts Commission gives us Figure Fragments: The Part as the Whole, an expanded form of a exhibition by the same name, formerly at the Betteravia Gallery in Santa Maria. The exhibit will move from Santa Maria to the Channing Peake Gallery in downtown Santa Barbara starting September 6, and will remain there until January 18.

Patrick Trimbath

The 25 regional artists contributing to this exhibit include Sky Bergman, David Brown, Patricia Houghton Clarke, Steve Cushman, Rebecca Erbstoesser, Nat Fast, Cathy Gregg, Jason Hadley, James Hapke, Ian Hassett, Mary Heebner, Sol Hill, Dan Levin, Alissa Massey, Rafael Perea de la Cabada, Keith Puccinelli, Maria Rendon, Ron Robertson, Ross Rudel, Libby Smith, Patrick Trimbath, Elizabeth Turk, Dug Uyesaka, Seyburn Zorthian and Pamela Zwehl-Burke.

“As a culture, the impact of fragmentation on our lives reveals itself in new and diverse ways, telling ourselves who we are,” said Priscilla Bender-Shore. Through her exhibit, viewers can hopefully discover the importance of fragmentation and individual parts in their own lives.
