Opera Santa Barbara Promotes Interactive Opera Lab

The word opera conjures up images of plush red velvet seats and fancy layered dresses, as dramatic works are performed before the bourgeois‘s finest. Not quite. In fact, Opera Santa Barbara (OSB) presents this amazing musical genre in a fun and accessible way. On Wednesday, January 23, OSB will demonstrate just how engaging opera can be… even for kids! OSB will host a sneak peek of its popular youth series Opera on the GO! at the Faulkner Gallery of the Santa Barbara Public Library at 5:30 p.m. The presentation highlights Opera SB’s highly interactive program, “The Opera Lab,” which will continue to tour public schools beginning Monday, January 28 and continuing through Friday, February 8, stopping in Ventura and Santa Barbara County schools for the first time.

OSB’s artistic director Jose Maria Condemi, who designed “The Opera Lab,” implements improvisational theatre techniques to involve kids in opera. Four seasoned opera singers and a gifted pianist will introduce students to the building blocks of opera, teaching the musical, theatrical and narrative elements. Students will then put their new tools to practice and develop their very own opera! The assembly concludes with the artists’ performance of the students’ unique opera, inviting the students to marvel at their work.

Expansion of Children’s Chorus Means More Opportunities for Song

Starting September 10 and occuring weekly through June 2013, Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus will expand its acclaimed programs to incorporate more weekly lessons for specific age groups, a new Carpinteria program and more options for dues.

With the new season of the Children’s Chorus comes a program called Vocal Explorations, which will cater to children ages 6-7, helping them grow their voices and discover the fun to be had in the Children’s Chorus. Also new to the program is the Carpinteria Children’s Chorus, for young ones to the south of Santa Barbara.

Courtesy of SBCC Website

Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus (SBCC) is not only a great place to start children in their singing careers, but it’s also a community of kids who love what they do. With newer programs catering to younger age groups, children can join a lasting family that will help them learn the discipline of the vocal arts. Last seasons, members of SBCC collaborated with Santa Barbara favorites such as Opera Santa Barbara at several local a cappella groups. Such an arts education is something that is unfortunately disappearing from schools, making institutions like SBCC that much more important.

Want to sign your child up for Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus? Check out the website for schedules and due information.

Announcing Opera Santa Barbara’s 2012-2013 Season

This November, Opera Santa Barbara (OSB) will open what Artistic Director Jose Maria Condemi promises to be one of its “most memorable seasons.”

The season will begin with a production of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, conducted by Sara Jobin and directed by Keturah Stickann. Jobin, who made history by becoming the first woman to conduct mainstage subscription performances at San Francisco Opera in 2004, will feature Mihoko Kinoshita as Butterfly (Cio Cio San). Kinoshita made her London debut in the role at Royal Albert Hall in 2011, and was subsequently exulted in London’s Daily Express: “There is currently nobody who plays the vulnerable heroine better than Mihoko Kinoshita; she dominated the performance.” Hers will surely be a performance this season that you won’t want to miss.

Then in March 2013, OSB will debut its company premiere of Verdi’s Aida. This rendition was created by Francesca Zambello for New York’s Glimmerglass Festival, and has been described by her as “an intimate Aida.” OSB’s production will be directed by Michael Rau and conducted by Valéry Ryvkin. Michelle Johnson, who was chosen for the part of  Aida in  Zambello’s original Glimmerglass production, will sing the part again in Santa Barbara.

OSB’s third show of the season, Don Pasquale, will be staged in April 2013 and directed by the company’s own Jose Maria Condemi. The title role will be sung by Philip Cokorinos, who has been featured in over 30 productions for the Metropolitan Opera.

With so many renowned artists involved, Opera Santa Barbara’s upcoming season is sure to be a great one.
