Hospice of Santa Barbara Welcomes Artist James Petrucci

“Nimbus”, 22” x 30”, acrylic, by James Petrucci

Ready for something new and extraordinary? On Wednesday, November 14, the Hospice of Santa Barbara will host local artist James Petrucci in his exhibition entitled beneath the surface. It will take place in the Leigh Block Gallery from 5:30 to 7 p.m., where there will be a wine and cheese open house reception for the new exhibit.

A self-taught artist from Santa Barbara, Petrucci attempts to communicate pure motion with his exhibition, which will feature both landscapes and portraits. His display will express an “inner world without having a person or portrait as a foundation, just a pure emotional state,” describes Petrucci.

Although Petrucci is self-taught, he has had several incredible mentors throughout his career, such as painters Elias Rivera and Susan Contreras. He has showcased his work in many places in the United States, and received the William T. Colville artist grant, as well as the Arts Fund Individual Artist award for two-dimensional work in 2011.

Petrucci plans to donate 25% of the proceeds from his art sales to Hospice of Santa Barbara, Inc., which volunteers its free professional counseling and care-management services to more than 500 children and adults who are experiencing the impact of a life-threatening illness or grieving the death of a loved one.

So not only will you be supporting the talented Petrucci and his incredible art, but you will also help out a great organization that aids thousands of people every year. Don’t miss out on this opportunity!

Hospice of Santa Barbara Exhibits Local Artist’s Photography

Hospice of Santa Barbara is hosting an open-house reception to welcome the work of local photographer Betsy Mooney on Wednesday, April 25 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The exhibit, titled “On Tender Wings,” will be featured in the Leigh Block Gallery until mid-July.

Mooney’s exhibit will showcase photos of butterflies that she was inspired to take in memory of her son Joshua, who passed away in October of 2005. Along with counseling through Hospice of Santa Barbara, Mooney credits the creative process of photography for helping her heal. And looking at her photographs, it is easy to see why the graceful butterfly, which is the symbol of Hospice of Santa Barbara and representative of change, growth and metamorphosis, became one of her favorite subjects.

Refreshments, cheese and wine will be served at the reception, and Mooney will donate a portion of the proceeds from her art sales back to Hospice of Santa Barbara. For more information, call 805/563-8820 or visit www.hospiceofsantabarbara.org.

Hospice Santa Barbara Features International Photo Exhibit

Hospice of Santa Barbara welcomes local photojournalist Michael Robertson, who will display his work in its Leigh Block Gallery through mid-April. On Wednesday, January 25 Hospice of Santa Barbara will host a wine and cheese open house reception for the new exhibit from 5:30-7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend this free event.

Robertson is a documentary photographer with a focus on the human condition. The exhibit will feature black and white photographs of Bangladeshi laborers, Voodoo practitioners in Haiti, lumberjacks at work in Romania, child laborers in Egypt, rickshaw wallahs in India and AIDS patients living in a hospice in Thailand. The exhibit will also feature color portraits of children from around the globe.

The experience of the AIDS patients in Thailand especially moved Robertson. While visiting a remote Buddhist temple in Thailand’s Lopburi Province, Robertson visited a sparsely equipped hospice that was opened to care for the country’s rising population of AIDS patients. The hospice is staffed by several monks and medical staff who allow the patients to die with dignity. Many AIDS patients in Thailand are dismissed by family and friends and left to fend for themselves. The monks take in these medical refugees and care for then in the last stages of the disease. They provide as much comfort, medication and spiritual guidance as they can for their patients.

“These children represent the future, and by aiding suffering and improving the world, it is their future we are benefitting,” says Robertson.

Robertson will donate a portion of the proceeds from his art sales to Hospice of Santa Barbara, Inc., a volunteer hospice organization which provides free professional counseling and support services to more than 500 children and adults every month who are experiencing the impact of a life-threatening illness, or grieving the death of a loved one. For more information, please call 805/563-8820 or visit www.hospiceofsantabarbara.org .
