Gluten-free eaters rejoice! Santa Barbara’s Simply Pies has received its gluten-free certification from Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO). The certification had perfect timing, as May is Celiac Awareness month, and now Simply Pies can ensure that customers with Celiac Disease and any gluten intolerance can dine out with confidence.
To become gluten-free certified, an independent third party must test a company’s products to ensure that it is in fact gluten free. Now all of Simply Pies’ gluten-free menu items will be marked with a GF logo, which represents quality, integrity, purity of products and strict gluten-free standards.
Since Simply Pies’ commercial space opening in 2008, owners Nancy Blau and Hana Miller have provided gluten-free options. When opening their restaurant space in Goleta in 2010, they began to research a process for gluten-free certification in order to provide consumers with assurance that their gluten-free menu options would not prove problematic for individuals with gluten intolerance or Celiac Disease.
“We didn’t initially set out to develop a gluten-free crust. We had so many customers coming through our door asking about gluten-free pie and baked goods that we realized our community was undeserved in this market. We tried every other GF crust on the shelves and were underwhelmed,” says co-owner Nancy Blau.
Co-owner Hana Miller agreed, “We have friends who are Celiac and gluten-intolerant and know how difficult it can be to find really delicious products.”
Simply Pies provides locally sourced, farm-fresh dessert pies, potpies, cheesecakes, quiches and more! Not only can everything on the menu be made with a gluten-free (and certifiable) crust, but vegan and no sugar options are also available.
