The Project –Fine Art Zone Opens its Walls to Men: Dan Levin is “Mr. February”

Up until now it’s been all about the girls at the Project –Fine Art Zone (740 State St, Suite 1, on De La Guerra Plaza), a collaborative non-profit art gallery owned by nine female artists–ERIKA CARTER, SUSAN TIBBLES, LIZ BRADYLISA PEDERSEN, VIRGINIA McCRACKEN, DONNA ASYCOUGH, ASHLEY DART, THERESA CARTER and LLOYD DALLETT–who operate the gallery themselves and donate 20 percent of all art sales to Girls Inc.

The gals will still have their art on exhibit in February, but starting this month they have invited some guys to show off their work—and match their commitment to donate to Girls Inc.—in the Zone gallery within the gallery.

Up first is Dan Levin, an assemblage artist who typically integrates man-made artifacts that have been discarded as no longer viable. Levin says that recently he has gravitated primarily towards materials extracted from beaches, streams, mountains and deserts.

Whether commenting on the mysteries of the natural world or simply producing an abstract that is aesthetically pleasing, Levin is driven to orchestrate relationships between objects that may never have been in close proximity – forming a singular composition or metaphorical device.

His exhibit at the Project, “My Mother’s Sun” is collection of what he calls “fibercations,” pieces that incorporate embroidery into the assemblage work, a new technique for Levin. “Since the ladies were gracious enough to let a male artist exhibit, I thought I’d try something different,” he says.

Levin will be the first of five “calendar boys” to exhibit at the Project, says Erika Carter.  They have also selected Philip  Koplin to exhibit in March, Rafael Perea de Cabada to exhibit in April, Dug Uyesaka to exhibit in May and Hugh Margerum to exhibit in June.

This week’s 1st Thursday reception is on February 2 from 5-8 p.m. TheProject –Fine Art Zone is also open Thursday-Saturday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. For information call 805/895-7759 or visit www.theproject-fineartzone.com.

Zack Paul: Inside Out at Sullivan Goss

We can’t wait for Thursday and the opening of ZACK PAUL: INSIDE OUT, the artist’s debut exhibition at Sullivan Goss – An American Gallery.

Zack Paul, Tents, No. 1 - Sand, Ocean, and Kelp, 2011/12, acrylic on board, 36 x 24 inches, signed on back

As featured in the winter issue of Santa Barbara SEASONS, in his newest body of work, Paul explores ideas from architecture, graphic design, and the visual languages of Constructivism and California Hard Edge painting. With his new series of paintings and constructions, Paul breathes new life into old ideas about plans vs. accidents, about the rationality of the grid and the immediacy of the painter’s gesture.

Here is a terrific video showcasing Paul’s work, SGTV Presents ZACK PAUL: INSIDE OUT, which will be on exhibit at the gallery from February 2 through April 1.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1974, Paul now lives and works in Santa Barbara where he is part of an emerging and colorful contemporary art scene. He works in the Can(n)on Art Studios in Old Town Goleta, where he shares space with area artists James Van Arsdale, Kimberly Hahn,Elizabeth Folk, Steven Soria, and Saul Gray-Hildenbrand. The artist adds his first solo exhibition with Sullivan Goss to a list of shows internationally at contemporary art festival, AP’Art in St. Remy, France and at home at CSU Pomona in Los Angeles and Kitsch Gallery in San Francisco. In 2008, he won awards from the Santa Barbara Arts Fund.

The artist debuted with Sullivan Goss in GEOMETRIC ABSTRACTION: Recurring Patterns in American Art in 2010, where he showed brilliantly alongside abstract artists from the 1930s in New York to California artists from the 1960s.

Paul sold most of his paintings from that exhibition.

His interest in color, form, space, materiality, and process has compelled him to learn more about the language and concerns of modern and contemporary critical theory. These readings, in turn, give his work an intellectual seriousness that stands in marked contrast to the breezy, cool, fun, and graphic quality of his work. Not to worry, this exhibition will take the viewer on a journey through the artist’s process, showing how nature and architecture can be seen as a series of disconnected geometric shapes.

Monday’s Film Fest Report

Another great Santa Barbara International Film Festival is well underway.

We can’t wait for tonight’s tribute to the great director, Martin Scorsese, whose current film Hugo is a top contender for the Oscar’s.

We saw some great films over the weekend. Staff favorites so far were Starbuck,

Starbuck

which screens again on Friday at 7:40 p.m. at the Metro 4; Pina 3D (a best documentary nominee for an Academy Award and probably the best use we’ve seen of 3D technology since Avatar), which screens again on Saturday morning at 10:40 a.m. at the Metro.

Our staff was also wowed by Cadaver, one of several shorts in the animated short program 2.

It’s not scheduled to play again, but keep your eye on the SBIFF website for updates, as additional screenings are added as the festival progresses. Also, SBIFF has a new app this year which is very cool and will let you see the updates in the schedule in real time on your iphone or ipod. For more information click here or search for festival genius in the app store.

Also, don’t forget about 3rd Weekend, February 11-12, where film festival favorite films are shown for FREE all weekend at the Riviera Theatre.

Fiesta’s La Presidente 2011 Joanne Funari was presented with the 2011 Citizen of the Year Award in recognition of her efforts and contributions to support and promote downtown and for her never-ending willingness to volunteer her time, energy and resources to many different organizations, and for her commitment to building a stronger community by successfully bringing together governmental, cultural and business sectors to benefit the vitality and economic well being of downtown Santa Barbara.

Anna Luisa “Annie” Marroquin received the Harriet Miller Youth Leadership Award. Marroquin is a senior at Dos Pueblos High School carrying a 4.27 GPA. She was chosen for her outstanding leadership in school and in the community. Recommended by Silvina Pereira, a counselor at DP, who says that Annie is “one of the best, exceptionally academically talented Latina students that I have had the pleasure of working with in my 16 years as a school counselor.”

The Downtown Organization’s George Gerth Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Roger Durling of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Roger is an important member of many of the Downtown Organization committees including the Executive Committee, the Promotions Committee, the Safety Committee and the Nominating Committee. Santa Barbara Film Festival Update

So far the Santa Barbara Film Festival is off to a great start. Opening night was a lot of fun and today’s writer’s panel was stellar.

We’ve heard good buzz about several films, including Starbuck, which is not about coffee but about a man whose life is upended when a lawyer informs him that he’s fathered no fewer than 533 children via his one and only talent: donating sperm; Pina 3D, which is acclaimed director Wim Wenders’ film about the brilliantly inventive dance world of Pina Bausch and her company; and Lucky, about a ten-year-old Zulu orphan whose mother recently died from AIDS and a suspicious elderly Indian woman.

As for the films themselves, we also just discovered a fun new feature for this year called “festival genius” which lists all of the films by title or by schedule and also lets you see how users are rating things, which is great because many of the films have multiple screenings and they add more as the festival progresses.

It’s definitely worth checking out, especially as additional screenings are added.

Hospice Needs Complimentary Therapy Volunteers

Hospice of Santa Barbara is seeking volunteers to donate complimentary therapy treatments to make a difference in the lives of terminally ill patients and their family members.

Massage, Reiki and cranial sacral therapists are especially needed. In addition to treating patients, Hospice of Santa Barbara also treats their family caregivers and the acutely bereaved.

Those interested must be licensed in their particular therapy. Hospice of California is hoping that compassionate, licensed therapy volunteers from the community will come forward to help those we serve who are greatly in need of their therapies.

Seven week long volunteer training sessions, one night a week, begin March 6. For more information on volunteering and upcoming training dates or for a volunteer application, please contact Dana VanderMey of Hospice of Santa Barbara at 805/563-8820 or DVanderMey@hospiceofsb.org.
