Macky World Comes to Art is Vital at The Elizabeth Gordon Gallery

School may be out for the summer, but the creative ladies of Art is Vital at The Elizabeth Gordon Gallery have a really fun exhibit going on. Puppets from Macky World, the brainchild of local artist/musician Matthew McAvene, are on view through July 13 and definitely worth checking out.

There’s a reception on Friday, July 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. and if it’s anything like prior receptions kids are in for a treat.

For more information about the Art is Vital children’s art program at The Elizabeth Gordon Gallery, see this story from the fall 2010 issue of Santa Barbara Seasons Magazine.

Sara Miller McCune Donates $1.5 million to UCSB Arts & Lectures

Congratulations to UCSB Arts & Lectures … and all of us in the community who enjoy their fabulous offerings.

Here is the press release on Sara Miller McCune’s generous gift.

UCSB Arts & Lectures Announces Gift of $1.5 million

Santa Barbara, CA – A generous leadership gift to the University of California at Santa Barbara’s Arts & Lectures program has been announced by Miller McCune Executive Director Celesta Billeci. Speaking at a June 10 reception to launch the 2011-12 season, Ms. Billeci announced that the program had recently received the largest gift in its history from well-known local philanthropist and businesswoman Sara Miller McCune.

“Sara has been an extremely generous supporter of Arts & Lectures for many years,” said Billeci. “She has an acute understanding of the value of our program to the university and the Santa Barbara community, and her commitment to our success has always been unwavering.”

Sara Miller McCune’s gift is a combination of endowment and current use funds that establishes an endowment to name the Arts & Lectures executive director position – now the Miller McCune Executive Director of Arts & Lectures – and it also provides current operating funds to help support programming over the next several years.

Sara Miller McCune is well-known throughout the region for her philanthropy, and particularly her support for arts-related organizations. A former Trustee of the UC Santa Barbara Foundation, her many gifts to the university encompass a variety of disciplines, including programs and initiatives in the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences.

Verena Leu Young, Senior Director of Development for Arts & Lectures commented, “Sara is a truly visionary philanthropist. Her gift will help to ensure that Arts & Lectures can maintain the programming excellence that the Santa Barbara community has come to expect of us.”

Billeci adds, “Sara’s gift is a strong testament to the value of Arts & Lectures, and an important investment in the future of our program. I am deeply grateful for her support.”

The $63 million project–which includes a new aircraft parking ramp, a new airline terminal building including site preparation and soil stabilization, relocation and rehabilitation of the 1942 portion of the existing terminal, a new short term parking lot and roadway–is nearing completion and expected to become fully operational in mid-summer.

Designed in the tradition of the Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style, the new 72,000 square foot terminal includes some stunning pieces of work by local artists as well as a number of green features, such as counters made from Plyboo (a rapidly renewable material that combines plywood and bamboo). According to airport officials, the building is on track for Gold level LEED certification.

"Fiesta" by Channing Peake, photo by Cheryl Crabtree

Worth checking out is Fiesta, by iconic artist Channing Peake. This bright and colorful 60’ foot mural that was dedicated and displayed in the El Paseo Restaurant’s Gold Room in 1984.  More than a decade ago the mural was removed and put into storage. On loan to the Airport by the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission, the mural was refurbished and displayed in the new airline terminal for the community and visitors to enjoy once again.

Also of special note is Santa Barbara 360 by Lori Ann David. This 20′ full-scale mosaic medallion, impressionistically interprets the visuals of a continuous local landscape, directionally oriented inside a graphic-illusion border, all within an overall Moorish entwined arched structure design.

Fashion Photo Shoot … Santa Barbara Style!

Santa Barbara’s more than just a picture-perfect place to live (or visit!), it’s also a perfect place to shoot pictures.

Fashion: Santa Barbara Style! from Dana Kurth on Vimeo.

Adesso Jewelry, created by Santa Barbara artist Samantha Goldstone (featured in the Winter 2011 issue of Santa Barbara SEASONS), local photographer Lisa Field-Elliot of Doorways Traveler recently shot these stunning photos of the Fall 2011 line on location at local winery Demetria Estate in Los Olivos. Local make-up artist/hair stylist Tomiko Taft was on the shoot as were local models Brandi Wolff and Hillary Souza.

Talk about being stamped with “made in Santa Barbara” style!

All Adesso products are handmade in Santa Barbara, and the jewelry is sold in better boutiques nationwide as well as online at www.adessoshop.com.

Many people are not aware that we have a County Film Commission which provides guidance with permits, locations, crew referrals, lodging, etc.–and this is BIG business, to the tune of $18 million (221 productions, 769 shoot days), with a ripple-down effect of $46 million, according to the more recent annual report from the Santa Barbara Conference & Visitors Bureau and Film Commission.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Visit Santa Barbara

It’s official! Prince William and his new bride Kate Middleton will visit our fair city July 8-10.

Fittingly, the focus of this visit will be a charitable one. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend The Foundation Polo Challenge on July 9th at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club to raise funds for The American Friends of the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry and Polo Training Center Santa Barbara. Prince William will play and Middleton will award the trophy. The day’s festivities will include a luncheon by celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis as well as the charity polo match and presentations.

The charitable focus of this visit by Prince William and his efforts to raise awareness on behalf of many vital charities. The Prince’s support sets an example globally, yet also resonates very clearly on a local level in Santa Barbara which is known for its strong environmental advocacy. Santa Barbara is an incredibly philanthropic community, placing great importance on supporting its numerous valuable and innovative nonprofit organizations that do such critical work for the city.
