We worked with fabulous filmmakers Erin Feinblatt and Lauren DeBell to go behind-the-scenes on our cover story photo shoot, photographed by Jim Bartsch, with the Hamer Family. (See the story by Cheryl Crabtree on page 48)

This was SEASONS first venture into video but it certainly won’t be our last. Take a look and let us know what you think.

Picnic in the Park-improving lives one lunch at a time

During the school year, nearly 25,000 kids get a free or reduced school meal every day. During the summer, however, 85% of these kids end up going hungry or live off processed, calorie-dense, chemical-based “food.” The Santa Barbara Food Bank is adding on to Kids Summer Lunch program this summer. Taking advantage of Federal reimbursable grants, the Food Bank is launching one of its biggest programs to date—Picnic in the Park: Free Healthy Lunch for Kids!

Starting as soon as school is out, Picnic in the Park will feed lunch to 2,000 kids, 5-days a week, for 10 weeks all across the county. 11 sites have been chosen for the program based on the lowest income areas that do not feature other non-profit food distributions. These sites include Los Alamos, Grogan Park, New Love Community Center, Tanglewood, Carpinteria Main School, Carpinteria Park, Isla Vista YMCA and Isla Vista Park. There is no income requirement so anyone 18 and under is welcome to join in the program.

Following the mission to end hunger through good nutrition, the lunches will all be freshly prepared, leaving out all pre-packaged, highly processed junk-food. Along with the program, the kids will be encouraged to participate in fun physical activity (such as ‘Bicycle Blender,’ literally a blender powered by peddling a bicycle) and learn food literacy (the understanding of food, including agriculture, nutrition, food preparation and community). Local businesses Santa Barbara Running and Kids Corner are set to help with the physical activities. DeVreese of Santa Barbara Running commented, “We are thrilled to be a part of the Picnic in the Park Program this summer by developing the physical activities for the children.  We believe that encouraging exercise through fun, team-oriented physical activities is a wonderful complement to the nutritious meals the children will be receiving and sets the tone for a lifetime of healthy living for these children.”

Picnic in the Park is currently recruiting volunteers to help prepare the meals at donated kitchen sites as well as to help distribute the food. Training programs begin in May.

James Van Arsdale at Left Coast Books

Mixed-media sculptor-installation artist James Van Arsdale’s latest exhibit, “Everything You Hear is True,” is on view through July 2 at Left Coast Books. We peeked in on the gallery opening on Friday.

James is one of the local artists who share “Cannon Studio” in Old Town Goleta. His art reflects the same mixing of cultures his childhood did; son of a military officer, James still grew up immersed in the sixties counterculture. His work is a mix of pop and psychedelic art with a serious commentary on the permeation of violence and military in our modern culture. Instead of focusing on one medium to express his thoughts, James explains that he doesn’t like to be limited but instead use whatever media is needed to complete the project and get the idea across.

If you’ve never been to Left Coast Books, stop by; with the feeling of a warehouse of books, it’s a great location for this exhibit. On entering the gallery, the first piece you’ll walk up to is probably the Interplanetary Recording Device (2011). Based on a machine used to communicate with those who have moved beyond this world, this piece’s candy green and smooth surfaces contrast with its dark purpose.

Also included in the exhibit is Wounded Battleship (Armada) (2011). Inspired by the tenth anniversary of the USS Cole incident, in which a US navy vessel was attacked in a Yemeni port, the piece consists of a wooden sea covered with giant monopoly battleships, each with a bite taken out of its side. James explained that the fleet of toy ships symbolizes both strength as well as weakness.

On an adjacent wall, my favorite part of the exhibit is displayed. Three Ray Guns (2011) hang about a foot off the wall, their bright colors sharply contrasted by the stark white behind them, and lit to perfection so that the multiple shadows give you the impression of an army of guns. Meant to be “retro yet futuristic,” James based the guns off 1950’s craft projects, with the bright colors and wacky patterns meant to remind one of “candy and Disneyland.”

Opposite the Ray Guns, two black and white images are framed in bleak black and positioned within yet another frame of bright colored construction paper, adding just enough of that fun retro feel. Rapid-Fire Cigarette Machine (2009), James explained to me, is based on a real machine that helps quickly hand-roll cigarettes. It’s his way of making fun of both the smokers and the non-smokers, he explained with a smile. The second image, If Wal-Mart Comes to Town (2009), has a very comic book feel to it, which is ironic, since James took the idea from an old army handbook.

Finally, keep an eye out for The Observation (2011). Hidden up in a corner, this piece questions who is looking at whom. A simple cut out from a piece of felt, the image is still very effective in its purpose.

This exhibit perfectly blends fun aesthetics and humorous ideas with some serious contemporary concerns. So take a walk over, get a glimpse of some stimulating art, and check out a book or two while you’re at it.

Chef’s Counter at the Wine Cask a Culinary Treat

Courtesy of Wine Cask

By Leslie Dinaberg

I had my first encounter with the Chef’s Counter at the Wine Cask this week and my tastebuds are still dancing with delight.

For those of you who haven’t heard, every Monday through Thursday night Chef Brandon Hughes is now offering a special Farmer’s Market fresh tasting menu paired with local wines, for an all inclusive price of $65 per person.

While it is typically a three-course menu, this week’s menu (still available tonight) included four courses. Sous Chef Nik Ramirez says he and Chef Hughes typically shop the market on Saturday morning and “duke it out over the week’s menu.” Their draw resulted in a victory for us, as we got an extra course on Monday, since “things looked so good we couldn’t decide on just three.”

First up, Rancho San Julian Sweetbreads with Green Farm Artichoke Saint Germain and truffle hollandaise, paired with Firestone Walker Brewery “Honey Blonde Ale.” Let me preface this by saying that, as much as I love Rancho San Julian (owner Elizabeth Poett was Seasons’ first Farmer’s Market profile when I took over as Editor in Winter 2010/11), I would never order sweetbreads if given the choice. However, one timid bite quickly convinced me they were AMAZING! Seriously, this dish deserves a permanent place on the menu. It was one of the most delicious things I’ve ever had.

Next was Mud Creek Ranch Kumquat Glazed Kurauta Pork Loin with “The Garden Of …” braised Chinese cabbage, sous vide shallots and the ’10 Margerum “Wine Cask” Sauvignon Blanc, which paired perfectly with the pork.

Our third course was Pan Seared Wagyu Strip Steak with Green Farm asparagus gnocchi, Northern California “Orchard” morel mushrooms and Earthtrine Farms Persian mulberry demi-glace, paired with an ‘09 Brander Cabernet Sauvignon. So tasty. Those Persian mulberries are out of this world. They’re definitely going on my Farmer’s Market shopping list.

Finally, for dessert Pastry Chef Rosie Gerard served an Almond Macaroon with chocolate marshmallow, almond nougatine and macerated strawberries, along with a ’10 Margerum “Alamo Creek” Grenache, which was the icing on top of a truly fabulous meal. Talk about spoiled; we also got to try a very special Margerum M3 Mourvèdre available only from the Wine Cask’s green tap system. This is the latest green trend in winemaking—no corks, no bottle waste, reusable kegs—definitely a great idea whose time has come.

The Chef’s Counter is definitely a fun place for a night out with that special someone, but the counter’s close proximity to the kitchen and one-on-one interaction with the chef also makes it a nice option for dining alone, if you want to treat yourself, and it’s a great and relatively inexpensive way to sample a taste of the Wine Cask.

David Gallup’s Channel Island Exhibit

David Gallup started with one painting, and now he’s done over a hundred! In the course of six years this artist created a full exhibit dedicated to the natural beauty of the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary. The exhibit, set to run May 21 through July 31 at the Weisman Museum, includes just 70 of the plein air paintings Gallup created while exploring the island chain. Often working under distasteful conditions, Gallup traveled all over the islands, hiking, kayaking, and sailing, anything that would get him to the most beautiful and remote parts of the islands.

“David Gallup never shirks from a challenge. The more challenging the subject, the more it stimulates his creativity,” said Michael Zakian, director of the Weisman Museum.

“Still,” Gallup says, “this is not about the Channel Islands as much as it is an exploration of a more global theme: discovering the wilderness in one’s back yard. The islands are a great way for me to engage this aspect of an ultimately universal human experience; man’s reconnection with nature.”

Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art, at the Center for the Arts at Pepperdine University, is located at 24255 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu. For more information, call 310/506-4852.
