Art as Activism

Posted on Nov 5 by SEASONS Magazine

This month local residents have another opportunity to get involved in the community through Better World Series, an ongoing project that builds community, profiles changemakers and inspires action for the purpose of building a better world.

Better World Series is finishing up the year with Art as Activism, exploring art as a powerful medium for positive social and environmental change.

Join Favianna Rodriguez, a defining leader in the activist art world, as she closes up this series with a bang.

Rodriguez is a renowned interdisciplinary artist, cultural organizer and political activist based in Oakland.

Rodriguez’s art and collaborative projects address migration, economic inequality, gender justice, ecology and more! She gives lectures all over the world on the power of art, cultural organizing and technology to inspire social change.

She also leads art interventions in communities around the country. Rodriguez is the Executive Director of CultureStrike, a national arts organization that engages artists, writers and performers in migrant rights.

Community members are invited to attend the presentation and hands-on art workshop led by Rodriguez on Thursday, November 9 from 6-9 p.m. at La Casa de la Raza (601 E. Montecito St.).

The lecture is donation based, and no one will be turned away. The art workshop is $20 at the door and includes the lecture, all materials for the workshop, food and drinks.

Art workshop tickets for $15 are available for advanced purchase here. For more information about Better World Series or Art as Activism, visit this website.
