UCSB Arts & Lectures presents An Afternoon with Joe Biden on Saturday, October 21 at 4 p.m. at the Arlington Theatre (1317 State St.). Joe Biden is the former two-term vice president of the United States alongside President Barack Obama. Before becoming the U.S. Vice President he served nearly four decades as a U.S. Senator in Delaware. His career is defined by his commitment to equal opportunity, global cooperation, human health, violence prevention and bipartisanship. Biden has helped carry the nation for nearly a decade and had stood strong in the face of many domestic and international challenges. President Obama awarded him with the prestigious honor of the Presidential Medal of Freedom “with distinction.”
“The best vice president America has ever had… A lion of American history,” says Former United States President Barack Obama.
As a senator from Delaware for 36 years, Biden was a leading force in the formation of domestic policy on some of the most pressing issues the country faced. Biden served as a chairman and a ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee for 17 years. He was a fierce force on criminal justice issues. Biden authored the landmark 1994 Crime Act and the Violence Against Women Act. Biden has worked relentlessly to change the culture around domestic violence and sexual assault to strengthen victims rights.
As the 47th vice president of the United States Biden took his values and determination to the White House. He oversaw the implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which was integral to rescuing the economy from the brink of another Great Depression. The Recovery Act added 2 million jobs to the economy and became one of the most efficient job programs in history. According to the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office, under former Vice President Biden’s jurisdiction, more than $800 billion dollars were injected into the economy with less than two-10ths of one percent waste, fraud or abuse.
During his time in the White House, Biden also chaired the Middle-Class Task Force. The Middle-Class Task Force is an administration-wide effort to improve the lives of working men and women across the country. He authored “Ready to Work: Job-Driven Training and American Opportunity,” a report to the president on how best to ensure American workers are trained for the jobs of the 21st century.
Biden also led initiatives to end gun violence in the U.S. under the Obama administration. His push caused the administration to strengthen the background check system and address pertinent mental health issues linked to gun violence.
Since the end of his term in the White House, Vice President Biden has continued to portray his values in his actions with the creation of the Biden Foundation, the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement at the University of Pennsylvania and the Biden Institute for Domestic Policy at the University of Delaware. Vice President Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden have also founded the Biden Cancer Initiative to end cancer as we know it.
