Steve Winwood, a Grammy Award winning artist, is coming to rock the Chumash Casino Resort’s Samala Showroom (3400 CA-246, Santa Ynez) at 8 p.m. on Friday, September 1.

Winwood’s career spans over five decades, during which he has sold more than 50 million albums. He is an Icon of the British Music Invasion, the musical movement marked by British Rock ‘n’ Roll gaining intense popularity in the United States. Winwood’s skills as a composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist have developed his impressive catalog of popular music. He is credited as one of the primary innovators of Rock ‘n’ Roll, and has contributed to the creation of some of the genre’s most celebrated achievements.

Winwood’s musical career began in 1963 at the age of 15 with the Spencer Davis Group. The band is known for chart-topping hits including “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “I’m A Man” and “Keep On Running.” He then went on to become a co-founder of the eclectic rock group Traffic in 1967. Traffic’s top albums include Mr. Fantasy, The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys and John Barleycorn Must Die.

In 1969 at the age of 21 Winwood pursued several new musical endeavors. He produced a variety of tracks with Blind Faith, a group comprised of icons Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Rick Grech. He later reformed Traffic and worked with some of the industry’s top artists, including Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Billy Joel, Tina Turner and Carlos Santana. Eventually Winwood decided to pursue a solo career in 1977.
