For many kids in Santa Barbara county, the carefree months of summer provide a time of relaxation, play and travel. However, for many other children in the Santa Barbara area, summer months can turn into a time of anxiety and worry. This is due to the reality that kids who normally don’t have to worry about receiving meals (through school’s free lunch programs) now are burdened with the worry of receiving a next meal.
To combat this problem, The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County steps in to lend a hand. The End Summer Hunger campaign kicks off this month with the goal of raising $100,000 to feed children through their Picnic in the Park program. With this goal in mind, the Foodbank will be able to serve 37,000 healthy lunches to 3,255 hungry children countywide.
The Foodbank isn’t solely concerned with kids’ physical health either. Summer is a time for play and fun, as well, so the Foodbank will also host a variety of live music, fun activities, games and more to support the mental health of the children who come to grab a meal.
This Picnic in the Park event will run until August 22 at various locations throughout the county. To volunteer for the program or donate to the cause, visit The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County’s website, foodbanksbc.org.
