UC Santa Barbara Alumni celebrates its Women Alumnae of Distinction in Politics by honoring Representative Lois Capps (MA ’90) with the Lifetime Achievement award, and honoring Fox Newscaster Harris Faulkner (’87) with the Distinguished Alumna award. The Exceptional Women, Exceptional Gauchos panel discussion awards ceremony and luncheon will be held at 12:30 p.m., on May 20, at The Fess Parker (633 E. Cabrillo Blvd.). Faulkner will receive her award electronically from the Fox News set.
A panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities faced by women in the male-dominated world of politics will be moderated by California State Board of Education Member Nicolasa Sandoval (Ph.D. ’07). The panel includes Capps, Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley (’74, MA ’81) and San Jose Vice Mayor Magdalena Carrasco (’91).
“UCSB has long been an advocate for the advancement of women in all fields,” says Jan Campbell (’74), co-chair of the event along with Julie Capritto (’81). “It is our honor to co-chair this event for the second year in a row to highlight these exceptional women and the rich contributions they have made to our community, our nation and the world.”
A respected congressional leader, Capps served in the United States Congress from 1998 to 2017. She helped to pass legislation on the national nursing shortage, prevent domestic violence against women, curb underage drinking, improve mental health services, distribute emergency defibrillators to local communities, bring CPR instruction to schools and provide Medicare coverage to Lou Gehrig’s disease patients. Capps has been at the forefront of environmental protection, preventing new oil and gas drilling and protecting consumers from the financial burden of cleaning water contamination. She retired from Congress in January. Before succeeding her husband Walter in Congress, Capps had successful careers in nursing and education that deeply informed her 18 years in Congress.
A multiple Emmy Award-winning newscaster and trailblazer in her field, Faulkner co-hosts Fox News Channel’s Outnumbered, ranks among Nielsen’s top 10 Cable News Programs of 2016 and hosts FOX Report Weekend. Faulkner has received six Emmy Awards for her work, including 2004 Emmys for Best Newscaster and Best News Special, and the National Headliner Award for Best Newscast. A motivational speaker, writer and philanthropist, Faulkner received the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Lifetime Achievement Award for her humanitarian efforts.
