With the third season of the Elmer Bernstein Memorial Film Series underway, The Granada Theatre Film Series presents Birdman of Alcatraz. This captivating 1962 film is screening on Monday, May 8 at 7 p.m. at the Granada Theatre (1214 State St.).
Birdman of Alcatraz is a film that details the remarkable story of an inmate, Robert Stroud, who becomes a talented ornithologist and published author while in solitary confinement. The film features one of Elmer Bernstein’s most memorable cinematic scores and stars Burt Lancaster, well known for his other roles in Elmer Gantry and Atlantic City. Lancaster plays the fascinating Robert Stroud in this film. Stroud combats his loneliness in solitary confinement by nursing and healing a bird back to health. After researching and publishing a book on bird diseases from within his cell, he meets and marries a fellow bird enthusiast, Stella. Stroud’s life takes an unexpected deviation when he is transferred to Alcatraz. Audiences at the Granada Theatre will experience the details of Stroud’s life through The Granada Theatre’s cutting edge 4k digital cinema system.
The series curator, Jon Burlingame, is the nation’s leading writer on music for film and an expert of the film composer Elmer Bernstein. He is well-versed in his craft and has published four books on music in motion pictures, he also regularly writes for Daily Variety and the Los Angeles Times.
