The 18th Annual HOPE Awards will gather again this month to celebrate champions of education across the Santa Barbara community. This year’s awards will take place on Thursday, April 20 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum (136 E. De La Guerra St.). The Santa Barbara Education Foundation (SBEF) will honor educators themselves, elected officials and community members. Ed Heron will be honored with the 2017 HOPE Award. Heron has been a denizen of Santa Barbara since 1948 and has dedicated himself to building partnerships between schools, businesses and the Santa Barbara community. SBEF honors him on the occasion of his retirement which ends his eight years of service on the Santa Barbara Unified School District of Education.
The event also aims to celebrate children and their many talents. Students from Santa Barbara Unified School district will provide musical entertainment for the evening. SBEF has also partnered with the district’s high school culinary programs who will cater the event alongside top Santa Barbara County restaurants and caterers. In addition to this, there will be a wine list which features the skill of Santa Barbara winemakers.
“This event is a great opportunity for us to showcase the important programs that operate in the district, while also honoring those who have had enormous impact on our students,” says Santa Barbara Education Foundation Executive Director Margie Yahyavi. “It’s also a really fun evening!”
This event will not only be a fun evening, it is also a charitable cause. Funds raised at the event help provide scholarships for students enrolled in SBEF’s Get Ahead summer school program which offers for-credit courses for high school students. 2016’s SBEF event helped raise enough funds for nearly 100 students in need.
