UCSB Arts & Lectures presents Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu with Masters of Hawaiian Music on Sunday, April 9 at 7 p.m. at UCSB Campbell Hall.
“There is nothing quite like the lilting flow of [Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu]… not unlike the motion of the sea,” says the New York Times.
The acclaimed company Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu will bring the rich traditions of Hawai’i to the Campbell Hall stage. Under the direction of seasoned hula master Patrick Makuakāne, Na Leu Hulu Ka Wekiu will perform the hula mua or the “hula that evolves,” a fusion of traditional and contemporary dance. These dancers have their own definitive style that preserves the captivating movements of their ancestors while simultaneously evolving through new expression. This performance also features Grammy Award-winner George Kahumoku Jr. and multi-instrumentalists Nathan Aweau and Kawika Kahiapo who expertly share the Hawaiian sounds of ki-ho’alu (slack key guitar).
