A Grammy Hall of Famer, Mathis is best known as a romantic singer combining jazz, traditional pop, Brazilian music, Spanish music, soul, soft rock and rhythm and blues together. Mathis has sold over 350 million records internationally, and achieved gold or platinum status with many of his albums. The hits, “Chances Are,” “Misty” and “It’s Not For Me to Say” have all been initiated into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Mathis has gained popularity among the adult contemporary audience because of his focus on the more romantic side of jazz and pop music. His 1958 album, “Johnny’s Greatest Hits” has become one of the most popular albums of all time, spending almost 10 years on the Billboard Top Albums chart.
Awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003, Mathis’s success is evident to this day. In each decade of his career, Mathis has secured at least one Top 40 hit. His No. 1 hits are “Chances Are” in 1957 and “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late,” a duet released with Deniece Williams in 1978. This duet marked the first of many over the subsequent years, including songs with Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, Jane Olivor, Stephanie Lawrence and Nana Mouskouri.
