Have you ever wondered what it would be like to take tea with her Majesty the Queen? Well wonder no more! Join Conductor JoAnne Wasserman, Board Members of Santa Barbara Choral Society and former Royal Chef to Queen Elizabeth, Darren McGrady, for a Royal Tea on March 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Music Academy of the West’s Marilyn Horne Main House (1070 Fairway Rd.). Honorary host of the afternoon event is Barbara Burger, renowned for her many years of support and service to Santa Barbara’s non-profit arts community.
Chef Darren McGrady, who was royal chef to her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and to the late Princess Diana and her charming sons, will be on hand to give guests the inside scoop about the royal preferences for afternoon tea.
Sup on tiers of the royal favorites of splendid sweets and savories, including the Queen’s Birthday Cake, Coronation Chicken on Brioche, and much more. Guests will be entertained by delightful insider stories of Chef McGrady’s time in their majesties’ service and the proper etiquette to observe at tea. And, as it is a Royal Tea, there will be bubbly and plenty of tea, of course, properly brewed in the British fashion.
Come in your very British tea party finery—don’t forget the hats!—and enjoy an afternoon of prestige and indulgence.
The event is being held as a sneak preview of the Choral Society’s annual Spring Gala, this year dubbed Rockwood Abbey, as the event to be held May 20 at Rockwood Woman’s Club is themed around the popular television saga, Downton Abbey. Chef McGrady will design the gala dinner menu as well and will return to appear at the gala in May.
