The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is offering free admission days for seniors age 60 and up. These admission days will take place on February 27, April 17, June 19, August 21, October 16 and December 18. The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden (1212 Mission Canyon Rd.) has partnered with Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapels & Crematorium to offer this amazing opportunity for seniors to explore the garden.
“The Garden is a great place for people of all ages. Seniors particularly enjoy the healthy, easy walking trails, opportunities for life-long learning, and becoming a part of our tight-knit volunteer community,” says Barbara Backlund, Visitor Service Representatives Manager at the Garden.
This year, the Free Senior Days will commence with a slide show exhibit of the winners of the 2016 Senior Photography Contest, “Santa Barbara Native Beauty.” This contest is designed to showcase seniors’ interpretations of the Central Coast’s breathtaking landscapes and native flora. This year, the competition had over 70 entries and was judged by Santa Barbara based photographer and author Bill Zeldis. Awards were given to David Cheng for “Garden Scene,” Barbara Hogdon for “Happy Tree” and Ines Labunksi Roberts for “Weed Reflections on Lake.” Honorable mentions were awarded to Margaret Kay Dodd for “Quiet Splendor ” and Daniel Rivera for “Crafty Recycling.”
The exhibit is open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, February 27 in the Garden’s Blaksley Library. There will also be an awards presentation from 2 -3:30 p.m. in the library. Before seniors finish their day in the garden, they can pick up a free pack of California Poppy Seeds in the Garden Gift Shop.
