SBMA Brings Technology into the Galleries with Release of Free Mobile App

SBMA’s new mobile app launches January 29.

The Santa Barbara Museum of Modern Art (SBMA) (1130 State St.) is set to bring new, innovate technology into the galleries to supplement the experience of visitors.

SBMA is utilizing technology from OnCell, a leader in mobile technology in the artistic realm, and has created a free mobile app. The app is available to both Android and iPhone users and on the web without the need to download. Visitors can experience this app alongside their gallery walkthroughs for the first time on Sunday, January 29. The first exhibition to utilize the app will be David Wiesner’s “The Art of Wordless Storytelling.”

Wiesner’s “The Art of Wordless Storytelling” will be made a more intimate experience through the app, which offers recordings of Wiesner himself describing his artistic process, techniques and approach alongside commentary on his artistic background and influences. It even provides video content including interviews with the artists and selected images from the exhibition. Not only does this provide great supplementary information for visitors, it allows the opportunity for easy self-guided tours.

The app also provides fundamental information about SBMA. From the app, users can view the hours and admission for the Museum, cafe hours along with the menu, store hours, links to the SBMA social media accounts, information and updates about the Museum’s Capital Campaign and renovation and information about travel opportunities through SBMA.
