The 2017 Outstanding Performers of the Year Award of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) will be presented to Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling on Friday, February 3, at the Arlington Theatre (1317 State St.) for their extraordinary performances in La La Land, a Summit Entertainment film directed by Damien Chazelle. Stone will be presented an award by the SBIFF for the first time, while this will be Gosling’s second, having received the Cinema Vanguard Award in 2008.
La La Land, written and directed by Academy Award nominee Chazelle, showcases the lives of Mia (Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Gosling), a jazz musician, struggling to pursue their dreams in modern day Los Angeles while making ends meet.
Moderated by Roger Durling, the 32nd annual festival will begin on Wednesday, February 1 through Saturday, February 11. Durling states, “Ryan and Emma’s luminous performances in La La Land remind us of the transformative and magical role of cinema. We are so proud to celebrate them and this incredible film and its nod to the classic love stories of Old Hollywood with a contemporary twist.”
