JOOKIN’ (jook·in): A street style dance that began in Memphis, Tennessee—it is a medley of hip-hop and jazz moves influences by ballet and modern dance. The lively dance involves improvisation, complex footwork, and bravado.
Lil Buck has been jookin’ since the age of 13 in Memphis. His early training in both ballet and hip-hop choreography bring his own personal style to jookin’. He first received notoriety in 2011, after relocating to Los Angeles, Damien Woetzel paired Lil Buck alongside Yo Yo Ma for a genre defying rendition of “The Swan” that went viral after Spike Jonze captured it on video. Today, Lil Buck has well deserved fame and accolades from notable performers and publications. He has performed in the New York City Ballet alongside Yo Yo Ma, Cirque de Soleil’s Michael Jackson: One and in Madonna’s Rebel Heart tour. Now, Lil Buck is bringing his talents to Santa Barbara.
