Some of the most talented young dancers in Santa Barbara County will compete to become the 2016 Spirit and Junior Spirit of Fiesta on Saturday, April 16 at La Cumbre Junior High School Auditorium, 2255 Modoc Rd.
Over 20 dancers will step on stage to embody the charm, grace and beauty of the culture of Old Spanish Days, dancing for the honor of serving as Spirits and ambassadors for Fiesta 2016.
This event marks the beginning of a beloved season of celebration, one that exemplifies the heritage and tradition of Santa Barbara.
This year’s festival theme, Santa Barbara: The Coastal Frontier, draws inspiration from the prosperous California lifestyle during the early nineteenth century, the Old Spanish Days. This 92-year-old tradition celebrates the establishment of the isolated Presidio de Santa Barbara from the time of it’s earliest inhabitants, the Chumash, to the Spanish explorers and on through the Mexican-America Rancho Periods.
Tickets are $25 and include entrance to the Las Artistas Reception, following the auditions. This reception will celebrate the participants and allow the public to meet the audition finalists, the Junior Spirit of Fiesta, the Spirit of Fiesta, as well as past Spirits.
