On July 25, Southern California will be welcome up to 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches from as many as 177 countries for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. The town of Solvang is hosting a group of 100 (65 athletes and their coaches) from Denmark from July 21 through 24.
The all-volunteer Solvang Host Town Local Organizing Committee (LOC) is chaired by resident Carol Paaske, who states, “We are thrilled to host these Danish athletes and make them feel at home for a few days as they get ready to compete in the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. We invite businesses, organizations and individuals to donate and to volunteer before and during the event. Now, it’s even easier to support this effort with Solvang Host Town Brag Tags.”
The “Brag Tags” will be available at several locations, including Book Loft, CHOMP, Kate’s Yogurt, New Frontiers Natural Marketplace, Nielsen’s Market, Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery, Paula’s Pancake House, Solvang Coffee Co., Solvang City Hall and Wandering Dog Wine Bar. The Brag Tag proceeds will go towards providing food, lodging, activities and transportation to the Danish Special Olympics athletes and coaches.
Solvang resident and community organizer Linda Johansen is serving as Fundraising Chair for the Host Town Solvang LOC. Johansen says, “We are actively raising money and in-kind donations to host 100 Special Olympic delegation members from Denmark for three nights lodging, all meals, and recreational and cultural activities. The Host Town Solvang LOC can accept cash, checks or credit cards as well as in-kind donations of services.”
