May is a great month to learn about contemporary art! Join Jane Deering, Santa Barbara gallery owner, as she leads viewers through studios and explains the concept behind contemporary art during the May Jane Deering Studio Tours. This month’s tours feature an array of works-in-progress by Santa Barbara contemporary artists. Upcoming tours will take place on May 11 and May 23. This three-part series (the first tour was on May 4) includes photography, drawing, painting, print and sculpture by Linda Ekstrom, Phoebe Brunner, Mary Heebner, Birgit Faustmann, Ann Diener and Alice Hutchins presented by Merrily Peebles. Check out the two remaining tours below:
10 a.m.: Viewers will visit the studio of painter and book artist Mary Heebner. The power of ancient presences and landscapes manifests itself in Heebner’s paintings, collages, handmade-paper, photography and artist’s books.
11:15 a.m.: Finish up at the studio of Birgit Faustmann. This Santa Barbara artist works mostly with three-dimensional sculptural forms that are geometric in nature.
10 a.m.: Begin with Jane Deering leading you through the Carpentaria studio of Ann Diener.
11:15 a.m.: Merrily Peebles presents the work of the late Alice Hutchins. Influenced by the social ideals of the 1960s, Hutchins found that magnets were a more easily understood method of expression than painting and focused her attention on magnetic constructs.
