From being discovered in a Washington, D.C. nightclub to performing at the Granada Theatre in Santa Barbara, Grammy award-winning vocalist Roberta Flack is nothing short of amazing. On Saturday, February 16 at 8 p.m., Flack will further prove to all audience members why she is hailed as one of the greatest songstresses of our time.
After jazz musician Les McCann discovered Flack in D.C., she signed with Atlantic Records and her career took off with familiar hits including “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” “The Closer I Get to You,” “Tonight I Celebrate My Love” and “Set the Night to Music.” In the past two years, she came out with the successful interpretive album of Beatles music, Let It Be Roberta, in 2011 and a collection of holiday classics compiled in Christmas Songs released in 2012.
Flack also gives back the gift of music to underprivileged children in the Bronx as founder of the music education program at the Hyde Leadership Charter School. The program, known as the Roberta Flack School of Music, is offers innovative and inspiring music education to the students free of charge.
