Jazz at the Lobero Theatre presents Tierney Sutton, Hubert Laws, and Larry Koonse, with Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet, on Friday, March 23. This charming trio features Sutton’s lush vocals backed by celebrated Laws and Koonse on guitar. Sutton normally travels with her own stellar band, but this collaboration event will be one of the most rememberable trios in jazz today. The inherent intimacy of these three artists is sure to create an unforgettable evening of sonic exploration.
Sutton is fresh off two Grammy nominations with her well-loved Tierney Sutton Band and is currently serving as the Lobero Theatre’s Jazz Artist in Residence. Former leader of the Los Angeles Quartet, Koonse balances teaching duties at California Institute of the Arts and a career as an in-demand session guitarist, having recorded with Ray Brown, Bill Perkins, Rod Stewart, Clay Jenkins, Linda Ronstadt, Charlie Haden, and many other jazz artists. Laws is one of the few jazz players to specialize in the flute and the premier musician on the instrument, evidenced by his 10 year annual domination of the DownBeats critics’ list and winning the 2011 NEA Jazz Masters Award. The Brubeck institute attracts talented young jazz artists from around the country. Named for alumni, Dave Brubeck and his wife Loa, the institute builds on the couple’s lifelong dedication to music, creativity, education and social issues.
The event will be held at 8 p.m. at the Lobero Theatre. For more information or to purchase tickets please call 805/963-0761 or visit www.lobero.com.
